No, your system is set not to write a debug log. Set to Small memory dump (64 KB).

I have never changed these settings before. Is the default setting set to not write a debug log? I thought the Microsoft site said it should be set up automatically?

What should I put under "Small dump directory: "? Right now it says "%SystemRoot%\Minidump ".

Leave it as it is alfun (ie %SystemRoot%\Minidump) that way those helping can point you in the right direction if required.

As per Google, hpt374.sys is associated with High Point RAID. Are you using any such RAID card ?

No RAID card but my motherboard has built-in RAID support. I have two hard drives on a RAID 0 configuration right now.

Also recently I got a SCSIPORT.SYS BSOD. Could my RAID drivers be corrupt?

alfun, please update your system details.

We need to know at least the model no. of motherboard to make further suggestions.

I ran this with the command sfc /scannow. After it finished scanning the window just closes. Is this normal? Are my protected system files OK since no kind of pop up came up saying my protected system files were an incorrect version?

I have updated my system details to the best I can right now.

Here is my most recent small memory dump, it was located in C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini082811-04.dmp:

Your Abit's IT7 motherboard has Highpoint IDE RAID !

If you are not using any RAID, I suggest that you uninstall the RAID driver.

I am using RAID. I also noticed this:
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for sptd.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for aswSP.SYS

Is it possible that avast! Antivirus could be causing my BSOD problem?

Could also be due to damaged driver. Try to reinstall the RAID driver.

Not likely, but you could uninstall and reinstall Avast, getting the latest installer from their website.

I'd start by removing Daemon Tools. They are a prime source of BSOD's.

I downloaded the latest RAID driver for my motherboard dated 2004/11/05 but there are no instructions on how to install the driver. I've searched Google but could not find any step by step instructions to install it for my motherboard. How do I install it? There are 3 files: hpt374.cat, hpt374.inf, and hpt374.sys

I remember I first installed the driver when I installed the OS. I had to press the F6 key and insert the floppy disk. The only useful thing I could find is this: "Since HPT374 UDMA/ATA133 RAID Controller is a dual-function PCI chip, when updating the driver, you must update it for both functions following their order as being shown in Windows device manager. "

I uninstalled Avast and the BSOD problem went away. After I reinstalled the program the BSOD came back.

I uninstalled Daemon Tools but the BSOD problem didn't go away.

Right now I am thinking about using an older version of Avast like 4.8 or 5 and seeing if that will work. Does anyone know if 4.8 or 5 is still supported and can still update to the latest virus definitions?

Previously, you seemed concerned about Avast related to the debugging tool not having the symbols (Post #29). Symbols are just for the debugging tool to read the dump files.

If you are having trouble with Avast, try uninstalling it and installing another antimalware, like Microsoft Essentials or AVG Free.

If uninstalling Avast got rid of the problem, uninstall Avast & get another anti virus as already suggested by mattman.

If you again face problem then we would look into drivers.

I would like to try and reinstall the RAID driver as suggested by you earlier. Do you have step by step instructions on how to do this?

If not then I guess I will have to format as suggested by Arie or use a different anti virus.

    For updating driver:

Login as Administrator. Right click hpt374.inf & click Install. That should install the drivers.

But if it doesn't help, change the anti virus - its much quicker & painless than a whole format and even after format there are no guaranties.

If I update the drivers this way will the RAID array get broken or anything? I won't have to format after I install the drivers will I? I'm worried about updating the drivers and losing hard drive data, should I be worried?

No guarantees. That's why you have backup.

I updated my drivers by opening Device Manager then going down to SCSI and RAID controllers, then updating both the HPT374 UDMA/ATA133 RAID Controller. I did it this way because I think that's how it said to do it in the readme file. The readme file wasn't very clear but that's how I interpreted it. This did not work.

But I found a solution, get the latest avast! Free which is Version 6.0.1289 and the latest virus definitions which is Virus definitions version: 110930-1 should fix the BSOD problem.

Here is my thread on the avast! forum. BSOD seem like a common problem on the avast! forum. I saw a few solutions but none of them worked for me so I created a new thread and they fixed my problem within a day.

I'm going to mark this thread as solved but will post back if the BSOD problem comes back.
