Hi, I run win98SE, and have just upgraded from WMP 6.4 to 7.1
The install went fine and rebooted. When I open WMP and click on any of the left hand buttons eg: cd, radio etc, it freezes, so I ctrl/alt/delete which shows WMP as 'not responding', so I click on 'end task'....and nothing happens, the entire comp has frozen.
I powered off and restarted and the same thing happens.
I uninstalled 7.1, which took me back to 6.4...and no problems running that, so I reinstalled 7.1 again, and the same 'freezing' happens again.
    Any ideas?
    Do you need anymore info?
    Thanks
    Matt

Did you download or run the install from a disk? You could try getting a copy from a magazine cover CD to install. When installing only install the basics until you can determine the source of the error. You could try running the self-repair by going to Add/Remove programs and clicking WMP.
Another thing to check is if the Device Manager has any error messages for your devices. It might be having trouble with some drivers.

    Matt:cool:

(Edit: Just remembered that it was almost impossible to find WMP on a magazine cover CD, but it would be good to get one off a disk)

    Hi Matt,
I have installed from both, CD and direct download.
I have run thru all the install options, from 5mb to 23mb, but still freezes.
I have used the repair tool on both types of installs, but no luck.
I had Realplayer and Quicktime also installed prior to upgrading from 6.4, so I uninstalled them both and used Norton Windoctor to remove any remaining files/registers, then disabled Realtime scanning, and tried to reinstall WMP again, both types, again with no luck.
I checked Device Manager, and no conflicts. I have downloaded the latest driver for NVidea GeForce 2 V40.72 ( an upgrad from the Detonator driver), but still no go.
    .
    Hmmmmmmmmm...any other ideas?.
The only reason I want to upgrade is that I want to download media files that end in .WMV, and V6.4 says this is third party, aligned with Quicktime.....I dont think so (?????), and 6.4 cant download the decompressor, Help points to downloading the latest WMP (7.1), which is what I have on several CD's and the download (from Microsoft)
    .
    Any other help us appreciated.
    Matt

One thing you might try is to download the WMP 9 Release Candidate which is out now, I believe it is nearing completion and it handles anything that 7.1 does and more...

If you wish to give it a try, it's available here, and there are downloads for both XP and 98SE, ME and 2000.

I agree with Laage. I have been using wmp 9 on win2k for several weeks.

Don't know what kind of internet connection you have, but it would be good to get all current updates from win update.

If you have a dialup modem this could be very time consuming! But do it if you can!
