Microsoft released a cumulative patch for Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0. In addition to including the functionality of all previously released patches for Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0, it also eliminates a newly discovered flaw in Internet Explorer's cross-domain security model.

Once again the download page has some confusing info. It lists the OS's for which the patch applies. Win98FE is not on the list (Win98SE is). When I went to Windows Update, I was offered the patch and it installed fine.

I see Welshjim has already addressed this issue but in all reading about the patch it wasn't mentioned until the MS download page that Win98fe didn't fall into the catagory of needing it. Does or doesn't?

bobmc32 --I assumed , since the latest patch was offered to me when I went to the Windows Update site, that it would be helpful to Win98FE (which I run). I can't remember now, but I think it was in the Critical category.

Well - duh! Looks like I could've thought of that  . Just went there (Windows Update) and it sits there as a "critical ". Thanks.

If I install the December Patch, do I also need to install the November patch? As you can see, I am very slow to update....as well as hesitant to continue playing this MS fix-it game.

Hi Ann - according to the implications here
this patch would be the one to get. Just go to the Windows Update site and it'll be listed as a "Critical" and probably the only one.

    Hi Ann,

I agree, the December IE cumulative patch would be the one to get.

There is also a Micorosft VM3809 download you need tht is ONLY available on WindowsUpdate..

I'm out of luck there unless I can get a direct download....I've switched the Sun's Java in the meantime. Might just stick with Sun's Java in IE this time, though.

Quite a fix-it roller coaster with Microsoft , isn't it? One day you're "caught up" (as far as you can be, that is, with all Microsoft's UNpatched vulnerabilities) the next day you're not!

I am thinking of hiring an employee to do nothing but Windows updates......hehehe!

I swore I that I was done with the Updates and was going to do no more of them, but then you wonder if it would be not too smart.

Alice as you know I don't use IE, but can you give me some info on the Sun Java. I know Ramona uses that only. Can I d/l that and will it install safely even if I have Windows VM? How do I get Sun Java to replace Windows VM safely?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Hi Ann,

I switched over to Sun's Java in Internet Explorer for a short time, then switched back to the Microsoft VM before installing the Java VM 3809 which a friend was kind enough to send me (later on I found other download sites). Details here:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12179&perpage=15&pagenumber=1

Sun's Java is a component of the Netscape 7 installation as you probably know but it is also available as a separate download from Sun Microsystems.

The easiest way to install Sun's Java would be to use Internet Explorer and use the automatic installation available here:
    http://java.sun.com/getjava/install-windows.html

Before installing Sun's Java (or any program, for that matter) I would disable your antivirus program.

If you prefer manual installation, which means you download the setup program to a folder then close your browser and all other running programs, then install, look here:
    http://java.sun.com/getjava/manual.html

Following the manual download instructions, you will get to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/download.html
where you will chose the link under JRE for either Windows (U.S. English only) or Windows (all languages, including English) as appropriate. The link will take you to a page for "Terms and conditions of the license & export for Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition 1.4.1_01 " and after you click Accept, you can begin the download.

    Help pages are here:
    http://java.sun.com/getjava/help.html

    Thanks Alice,

Why did you go back to VM? MS keeps updating and updating. Of course, there is no guarantee that the Sun Java will be perfect.

I will look at the links you posted. This is quite a netherworld figuring out MS and their goof-ups. :D

Why did I go back to Microsoft's VM?

I switched back because I thought I should have Microsoft's VM enabled before installing the VM3809 update although it might not have been necessary to do that.

I just thought that since the 'patched' Miicrosoft VM 3809 was available to me I might as well install it.

Alice. Just to clarify....you still use MSVM and not Sun Java?

Can I use Sun Java if I use NS 4.79 esclusively? Your remarks about going into IE and setting it for Sun Java makes me wonder how do I do it for NS?

Merry Christmas to one and all!

    Hi Ann,

I use Microsoft's Java 3809 in Internet Explorer and I use Sun's Java in Mozilla 1.0.1.

Netscape Communicator 4.79 uses it's own version of Java (NOT Microsoft's) so you don't need to use Sun's, although you CAN. A NEW option to "Enable Java Plugin" will appear in Edit Preferences Advanced, under "Enable Java" IF you have Sun's Java installed:

If you want to use Netscape Communicator's internal Java, leave Enable Java checked but DON "T check the bocx for "Enable Java Plugin" that appears underneath. That's what I do.

Hope that clears thigns up for you.

    Merry Christmas,
    Alice
