because of my business i use a usb adapter to transfer data from h.d.'s when rebuilding clients machine. have been using the iconnect from ppa intl for a couple years now and over 100 times its worked wonderfully. last night i was doing a data transfer and as soon as i plugged in the usb cable literally the h.d. started smoking and let me tell you it was hotter than hell. tried on another h.d. and exactly the same thing happened. started to smoke immediately. needless to say the data on the clients drive is toast.

my question is what the heck happened ???

An electrical short in the adaptor comes to mind. Guessing that you've smacked it with a hammer by now...

thats a fact. in all my years ive never seen a h.d. smoke like that before. really upsetting now i have to explain to client why her data is toast. even tho i setup ezbackitup for them to back up there data more cases than not they never do. lost a lot of sleep over this last night.

I've smoked a couple mobo's in my days... Once had a brownout in an office building. CO-workers pc wasn't even on and his psu/mobo and hard drive fried.

no money on this rebuild. going to give her a new drive and my labor for free. figure thats about all i can do.

i fried a m.b. once long time ago when i was testing the psu i forgot to disconnect the psu from the board and pow sparks. fortunately it was a very old machine so not a big lose.

hate when this happens. got a new device on order guess from now on i have to let clients know before i work on their systems to backup cuz some thing like this could happen again and thats very scary to think about.
