    Appreciate some assistance.

    Mainboard: PC Chips M748MR 1.0
    OS:W98SE
    CPU: PII 350MHz
    RAM: 256MB

    Working on a friends PC.

Mainboard has an on-board 64 bit 3D AGP Graphics Accelerator, however, it appears to have gone south. Windows boots, etc, and the Desktop screen is black with a few lines at the very top.

Decided to install a PCI Display Adapter: S3 ViRGE-DX/GX PCI(375/385) (What he had on hand.)

Went into BIOS Setup and made some changes:
In the Plug and Play area:
Primary Graphics Adapter: changed from AGP to PCI
    Assign IRQ for VGA: No
    In the Advanced CMOS Setup:
Primary Display: Absent??? Do not know if this disables the on-board video.

In Device Manager, View Devices by Type, under Display Adapters TWO entries show up:
    S3 ViRGE-DX/GX PCI...
Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) (!) exclamation mark

In Device Manager, View Devices by Connection, under Plug and Play BIOS, PCI Bus, PCI standard PCI to PCI bridge:
    Standard PCI..... (!) exclamation mark

Have tried removing the darn Adapters in Device Manager trying to get the PC to display just the S3 ViRGE, but to no avail. Every time it comes back with two.

Sure appreciate some help on this one.

I'm not quite shure what's the problem, but have u make shure that the disabling of the onboard graphic card isn't done by hardware (removing a pin or something)?

Also try to update the drivers of the S3...

    hope this helps.... good luck

    Thank you for the reply.

Initially, the PC booted to a black screen Desktop with a few colored lines running horizontally. The PC has on-board SiS 620 Graphics Accelerator, and it would not work.

Installed an S3 ViRGE, but it showed up as a duplicate in Device Manager along with the Standard PCI Graphics Adapter. Don't want that, so decided to go back to the on-board video, if recoverable.

Used the S3 card for some video capability to re-install the on-board drivers, and did some tinkering with the on-board video BIOS settings. The end result is that the on-board video is now working.

    The S3 card was removed.

All looks well in Device Manager while the PC is in Normal mode, but the PC will not go into Safe Mode. That will be a different post.

Have no idea what will show up in Safe Mode as far as video adapters are concerned.

    Quite a mess.
