Hi all, I have a dvd drive drive that attaches through a USB connection and it works perfectly on two laptops that I have (one xp, one Windows 7) but is not recognized at all on a desktop running XP. It is a Compaq Evo D510 and I have a wireless mouse working fine through the same two USB ports that I am trying to use this DVD Drive on.

When I plug the USB in I hear the familiar beeps and sometimes see the message balloon saying that it detects a device but it never shows up in my computer. I have to plug the power into a separate ac outlet because if I try to use it powered through the USB hub it gives me a warning message about it using too much power. On the two laptops it has no problem getting its power through the single USB line.

Is there any way to look at a USB port(s) and see what might be happening there to prevent the drive from being recognized?

Compaq Evo D510 Pentium 4 with 1gb (soon to be 2gb) of memory.

    Thanks very much,
    Jim Lee

    Got it!
Window actually gave me the correct advice which was to uninstall, then reinstall the device driver for that USB port.

    Coattail question:
I never have a problem reading or writing to RW DVD's. I often have a problem with more than one brand of DVD's where the drive does not recognize it as a writable media.
Is the 'trick' to match a specific DVD make with the drive and then stick with it forever?
Any alternative to that shooting in the dark approach?

    Thanks very much,
    Jim Lee

Glad you resolved the problem. One question. Did you have the drivers for the USB port or did Windows provide it?

I have found that it is best to stick with the brand that the device likes. You may be able to use more than one brand, but I buy the same brand and never have had problems.

Windows must have provided it because I don't even know who the manufacturer of the DVD drive is though I am sure I could find out if I had to. I just uninstalled and then reinstalled from the specific USB port in Device Manager. Once I finally thought to look in Device Manager I saw that Windows had put a yellow warning icon on that USB port.

The drivers that came with the DVD drive were for Win98. None for XP.

    Thanks,
    Jim Lee

I had the same problem. I got a new DVD burner that wojuld not work with my computer. I got the same yellow warning in Device Manager. I uninstalled in Device Manager, but when I restarted, it stayed the same. :(

My DVD was real generic so I had no idea who made it. Fortunately Windows XP found it somehow. Can you see who made your drive and ask them for a driver?
