About 2 days ago I tried to open Excel through Start >program and also from Desktop S/cut.
When I click to open Excel, a Windows Installer window opens to advise Preparing to Install...then Waiting to configure M/soft Office Prof. Suite 2003.
It then advises that "failed to locate, perhaps moved, renamed or removed etc.
A further window(Installation Error: File not found.
A required installation file SKU011.CAB could not be found.
The window then suggests that you insert CD if you installed from CD or alt. click Browse to find source if installed over Computer network.

The problem started a couple of days ago when 2 Microsoft security updates failed to install(5 attempts). KB2553072(Excel) and KB 2584052 (Office).

A window appears advising that The path C:\MSOCache\All Users\90000409-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9\PRO11.MSI cannot be found.

I have searched for the install. package PRO11.MSI in the folders but cannot find.

A further window says that "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. "

NB. I dont know if Excel was installed from CD or over network.

    I would appreciate help.
    Thanks......Joker

Consider a System Restore to a point prior to the security updates.

    Hi Peter C,
Performed a System Restore as you suggested and "bingo" I have my Excel back. All items I had saved in my docs with this program are intact.

One final question... I am hesitant to install the 2 security updates that I mentioned above as I feel they are the offending parties to all this.

    What are your thoughts ?

    Thanks.... Joker

These are the detailed KB articles on those updates ....

Try a manual download and install and check that your Office 2003 is at the latest SP level.

You have the confidence that a System Restore is effective, but even so I would try to install each update separately and test before installing the second.

Office can be a strange beast to update and 2003, 2007 & 2010 have common code so that although I run 2007 I still get 2003 updates. The stranger thing is that the 2003 updates will not install unless my data backup external drive is connected  I can find nothing relating to Office on that drive - apart from my data files.

The error may be thrown up because the update cannot find the installation source.

See if these hits throw any light on the matter .....

    Hi Peter C,
Have tried to d/load manually one at a time, but get the same "failed update ".
I was lucky enough to have a friend(IT geek) call by and corrupted files etc is the prognosis.

I don't have the original disk to be able to uninstall and then reinstall again.

It also appears that I have elements of Office 2007 and 2010 amongst the installation as I have been getting offered updates for 2007 and 2010.

I have therefore decided to uninstall and then upgrade.

Many thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

I will mark the matter resolved.

    Joker.
