    Hello Evewryone!

The icons on my desktop are not fixed to a grid and I can move them anywhere and they will stay there.

This is not the case of the files in the folders in My Documents. I am not able to put them in the order that I want them in the folders. They appear to be fixed to a grid.

Please explain how I may accomplish this.

    Thank you.

    Colin

Click View and you will have:

    Arrange by>.................
    Sort by>.........................
    Group by>..........................

    Is this what you want?

    Mickzer,
Thanks, but no. The files in the folder are still fixed to a grid and are unmoveable. I can not arrange them in the order that I want.

Give us some examples of the "order you want. "

Alphabetical is very much the norm. You can beat that by renameing the folders with numbers.

    2_Alpha

    Mickzer, and Steve R Jones,
Thanks for both your replies. I will try to explain. I have a folder. In the folder are files of various subjects that are relevant to the folder heading. I 'save' other documents to this folder from time to time. I would like to be able to put the files into any order that I would like to. (This I could do when I had W.XP.) I have an option on my Desktop to have the icons aligned to a grid or auto arrange. In My Documents this option does not appear. All files appear to be Auto Arranged and immoveable.
I wish to be able to move them around as I did with W.XP. (Or like I can on my Desktop.
I appreciate that numbering them would likely put them in the required order, but if I save a new file and want it in the 'middle' of the existing files, I will have ongoing problems!

    Regards,
    Colin

    Hallo Colinito,
So far i know this is not possible, there is no option "unsorted" in map options.
The only way to put files in the order you want is to use numbers or letters at the front of the file to get it sort the way you want! Hope this help you out.

    Kind regards,
    Tom

    Tom Emmelot,
Many thanks for your answer - seems like W7 is a tad behind it's predecessor W.XP. Shame! never mind. "Good old Windows etc" I suppose if the worst comes to the worst, I can put all the files on the desktop - very inconvenient, but it would seem to be the only way out.

    Regards,
    Colin

I'm running XP - the only place where I can align to grid or auto arrange is the actual desktop. If I open Win Explorer and go to the Desktop folder those option are gone.

    Steve R Jones,
When I was secretary to a jazz society, I used a folder in 'My Documents' in XP to store data relevant to the Society. I had the option to move the data which was saved into any order that I required. It was not Auto Arranged, it was Aligned to the Grid.
If I wanted to insert a file between two others, I was able to do so. I have since resigned from that post. However, I did so after I upgraded to W7. Since having W7 I have not had this availability to move the files around in a folder and I was trying to re-obtain that facility.

    Regards,
    Colin.

Yea, Windows XP's "Icon's ", "Tiles" or "Thumbnails" view will let you re-arrange files any which way.

There may be a way. I'll get back to this thread later, have to do some testing...

Yeppers this works in XP if you set the View to Thumbnail or Icon.

You then select VIEW again and go to Arrange By and and select Sort by or Group by.

I agree with you Steve R Jones, but my query is regarding W7, as I was previously able to do this when I had XP, I would like to be able to do it in the upgraded W 7 - but it seems that this is no longer an option.

Copy/Paste the below to a text file:

Rename it to whatever.reg, double click and allow to be added to the registry.

This will enable you to create a new folder and sort however you want.

The 'rub' is that this has to be a new folder not within your library. So for example create a new folder in \Users\{User Name\.

To revert you'd use this registry file:

Note: This will reset ALL folder views to default!

    Arie,
    Many thanks for your input.
You have now stepped into uncharted land for me!
I have not yet ventured into the registry further than to stop programmes from starting up.
I have copied and pasted your reply into a Word document and saved it, and will research how to implement your instructions. If I get problems or am unable to follow them, I will return and ask!

    Thank you.

    Colin.

    Arie,
That is most kind of you. I have never had the need to go into the registry, and feel a tad nervous about doing it. I think, rather than cause some 'irreparable damage' I will just have to carry on in the way that I now find that I have to.
I will copy & paste and keep your instruction until my "Guru" (youngest son) next comes on holiday, and ask him to decipher them!)
I shall now mark the thread 'resolved' and hope that if it it all turns pear-shaped, I can come back again!
