My stepson wanted to backup his computer and plugged in my 1TB Book Drive and his computer went blank, no power lights on the front, I looked in side, the LED by the battery would light up and nothing else. I removed the battery too reset the computer, same results.
I plugged the 1TB Book Drive in my computer and it works fine. He has an HP with Windows X P same as I do, but his computer is newer and bigger than my computer.
Although the other day he said that he smelled hot electrical smell, but his computer still worked until he plugged in my book drive, so I think it's the power supply

could it be a partial power supply burn out? if that is possible? or is it something else?

Hard to say anything before testing the components, but if there is no activity I would doubt the power supply too.

It might have burnt out the USB system. Try disconnecting any USB devices.

My stepson took his computer in to the computer shop to have it fix, I'll re-post in quick reply what was fixed when it comes back (He couldn't wait, need's it for collage).

He told me it was the power supply and it cost about $50.00 dollars plus tech cost.
