I can no longer get Auto Play to work on my CD drive. I've scoured the Internet and searched on various forums with no luck. Any suggestions I did get did not work. Even a Registry fix I received was not workable.

This is a shot in the dark but could iTunes have anything to do with it? The only time Auto Play opens up is when I plug my iPhone into the computer.

Not too long ago my CD drive wasn't even recognized and it took external tech support to figure out that iTunes had taken over my CD drive. On that issue, I've noted the registry fix and that won't happen again.

Don't know what else to check. I've also checked under Services and that setting is set to ON.

    Thanks.

Thanks, but I had already tried both of the instructions in links you provided.

I'm still searching on the Internet and wondering if iTunes may be the culprit since a while back my drive wasn't even recognized and was able to find out that iTunes had messed with my Registry. Got that fixed and not sure if that's when AutoRun stopped working.

    Thanks.

I checked out the Fixit link but the OS supported are only Windows Server 2003 and XP.

Could that be an issue if I'm running Vista Home Premium?

    Will wait until I hear.

The fix that James linked to doesn't work on Vista or Windows 7. If you suspect that iTunes is causing the problem, you could try uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it to see if that makes any difference with getting autorun to work.

Beyond that suggestion though there really isn't anything else that I can suggest. All of the solutions that I've looked at online have been the steps that you have already performed.

Maybe someone else could chip in and see if we can help get this problem resolved.

    I was afraid you'd say that. :(

I just may try the uninstall of iTunes. I was in the process of checking out the Apple site to see if anyone else has had this issue.

    Thanks.

I beg your pardon. I was sure I had the right tool, but I did not read the fine print thoroughly enough.

Here is a link for a Vista approved tool...

Edit: Actually, here is the page to the download link...

    James,

    Just wanting to make sure.

So Clean Handlers is the download I should do? I was reading the info on it and just wanted you to know that I still have the right context menu when I insert a CD. The emphasis seems to be on that.

If I look further down and click on the link for (under Similar Threads) #3 & #4 I end up being back to where those fixes are just for XP & Windows Server OS's.

Guess I'm a little paranoid and just don't want to end up with a mess I can't fix.

    What do you think?

I even went to the Microsoft site and they don't seem to offer a specific fix for Vista. Is that what you found?

When I searched online I couldn't find any other fixes for autoplay on Vista. It looks like Microsoft doesn't have a utility for repairing autorun problems for the new operating systems.

Go ahead and download the Clean Handlers program and run it. I would set a System Restore point just in case but it says that it does work on Vista.

Well, I downloaded the Clean Handlers file, ran it. It scanned everything and found NOTHING.

I'm going to uninstall iTunes and see what happens. Probably my PC will crash. :p

Clean Handler didn't work and neither did another fix I read about. Several people went into that one part of the Registry and renamed the one key. It worked for them but not for me.

I tried that and that didn't work either. Uninstalled iTunes, rebooted and reinstalled iTunes. When the option came up to have iTunes the default player for CD's I chose NO!!! But when I inserted a CD, iTunes opened up. That really ticks me off.

Right now my CDROM is still recognized and that's a good thing.

So I suppose this is something that someday may correct itself or I will go back to living without Autorun.

Thanks again for all your help here.

Sorry I responded so late (been out of town), and I am sorry the links I gave you did not help.

I am not familiar with Vista, so all I know about the software is via Google searches.
