Several years ago I "Exported" my Registry at least once a month. I thought this was good computing but the one time that I made a change that didn't work I attempted to "Import" that backup.

Since it's been a while, I honestly don't remember what the exact error message was but when I researched it at the time a response I received was that it wasn't unusual to get that message and of course I couldn't restore the Registry as I wanted to. I was also told that System Restore was a better method.

Does Registry Backup work or not? Or should you just backup the key you're working on?

Registry backup is great when you are tinkering with registry. Most of the other times its of no great use untill you restore the registry immediately after backup.

A partition backup would be much more valuable as it would restore everything including registry.

    Just my thoughts.

Hi vegaspat. I find that making an image of the harddrive is the best way to back up your data because if anything goes wrong you can restore the image when needed and be back up an running within a few minutes. Its similar to a partition backup.

If you are wondering whether a registry backup is worth doing, I would say like rsinfo suggested that its only good for a recent backup. Its not meant to be used in the long run.

I wouldn't use the registry editor to backup your registry since it doesn't actually replace the keys that you backup. It simply imports the data from the reg file which can lead to a real mess if done improperly. A utility that does a good job of performing a registry backup is ERUNT. Check it out.

If you are 'working' on a registry key, just make a backup of the key. But you should never need it (if you know what you're doing).

A system restore point includes a registry backup.
