My oem video card was getting horizontal lines in it. I looked for a replacement, but was unable to find one. After researching video cards that Dell installed on these laptops, I found a better performing card for a good price. I installed the upgrade card and now I have a black screen. Please find below the oem system info. Below that is anything I can find on both the oem card and the replacement card.

I used proper static discharge protection. I reinstalled the oem card, and its working for the moment. I think this may be a drivers issue, but I don't know. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Certainly a driver issue - the OEM card is an ATI Radeon, your replacement card in Nvidia.

You will need the nVidia drivers for that card - uninstall the ATI drivers first.

HI. Well... I tried to download the drivers for this card from nVidia. I never did find them on the nVidia site. I then went to the Dell support site. I also did not find drivers specific to this card. I did find drivers for another nVidia card (GeForce4 440 Go) that were installed on these Inspiron 8200 laptops.

When I tried to download these drivers, I received a screen that said "The content you are trying to access requires the Microsoft.Net Framework. Would you like to download and install this from Microsoft Download Center now?" I pushed "install." A setup window opens and I can see the progress bar moving.

After a minute a window opens. It says Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Setup across the top. There is a button to push for the license agreement. I clicked "accept" and then hit the "install" tab. The window next shows a download and install progress bar. The download completes. It then starts to install. Next I get a setup error.

"An error occurred during setup. Installed files have been removed from your computer. For known issues and troubleshooting information, see the online Readme. For error information, see Error Log. "

The error log has around 100 to 150 entries, dating back to 12-13-09. The dates are different but they all say, "Mircosoft .NET Framework 2.0a: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Mircosoft .NET Framework 2.0a MSI returned error code 1603. "

So it looks like I first need some help on installing the .NET Framework. Do I need to move this post over to another thread? Thanks.

    Edit
I'm searching on the Windows BBS now for .NET errors. Thanks.

Ok. Thanks Peter. I'm working on the .NET Framework issue now. Found it on another existing thread.

Regarding removing the ATI driver first, how will I be able to see the screen afterwards to install the nVidia drivers? Are there basic display drivers already loaded in to the XP OS?

Yes - the VGA driver. This is the one used in Safe Mode - you can check it out with your existing card.

Thinking further on this I would expect the computer to start up in VGA screen mode with the new card installed. As it apparently does not I wonder about the suitability of the card for that lap top.

Do you know that the card works??

Its a good question. I do not know that the card works.

It was advertised "as new." I purchased it off of ebay. The anti-static bag was not sealed when I received it. And there was nothing from nVidia in the package. As a matter of fact, there was nothing else in the package, not even an invoice or packing list. When I questioned the seller about the black screen error, they responded in ways that make me feel suspicious.

However, might it be a compatibility issue? I tried to check and make sure the card was compatible before I purchased it, but perhaps I made a mistake. So, how can I check the card for both function and compatibility?

    Update
    1. .NET Framework issue resolved.
    2. I purchased a used Inspiron 8200 today for $ 40.00. Sounds like a bad HDD as it does not POST. Swapped the video card into my 8200. It works. I'm having problems getting the resolution/pixel sizes correct for my 15" UXGA monitor, but I have good display with no lines and/or pixelation. The card from the parts laptop is an nVidia pn 05U855. I think its an Nvidia Geforce 4 Go 64MB Video Card. Now, on to get drivers for this card off of the Dell site.

    3. I'll check the original ATI video card in safe mode and see what happens. This original problem was much more prevalent when the laptop was on for some time. (HEAT?)

    Thanks

Function testing can only be made in a computer - news is not good on this front :( Compatibility - cross check spec with the ATI card - generally speaking any make of card should work in any computer given that the interface is correct - AGP, PCI, PCIe, but I do remember incompatibilities between AGP cards re. voltage. You could post on the nVidia forums for info.
    Possibly.

Hi everybody. Thanks for the help so far. I have the laptop working with the salvaged video card, PN 05U855. However, I'm still having problems with getting the screen resolution correct. I so far have been unable to match the resolution to my display which results in very small icons. I also notice that DVD's are not playing full screen, nor are they in color. I am still not sure if I have the correct drivers installed for this card.

How do I remove the old drivers and make sure I have installed the correct drivers for this card. PS... I am hearing rumors that these Dell laptops had compatibility issues with some of the video cards. Meaning = even though a OEM video card may fit, it may not necessarily work with the OEM display. Thoughts, suggestions, are welcome.

When you refer to the salvaged video card do you mean the one fitted originally?
Compare the info shown in your first post with the equivalent info as of now - does it match?

Negative. I purchased a used Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop and scavenged the video card. Current system info does not match the original configuration. Here's the system info from the system information/components/display with the scavenged video card.

I don't think you mentioned that before - hence the confusion at this end :)

Where did you obtain the drivers for that card - from Dell or direct from nVidia?

I doubt that any lurking remnants of the original ATI drivers are causing a problem - if there is no ATI software shown in Add/Remove Programs that's about as far as you can go on that.

When you installed the drivers for the salvaged card did you uninstall all nVidia graphics software through Add/Remove? Current nVidia drivers install OTT without problems, but older ones may not.

No problem. It is confusing. Sorry.

I think from Dell, but I'm not exactly sure. Is it generally better to go directly to the manufacturer, ie, NVIDIA or to Dell who built the computer?

This may be the cause or part of the cause of what's going on. I was not in safe mode at any time and may have been running the ATI card, or one of the NVIDIA cards when working on this. Should I be doing this type of work in safe mode?

So, what do you think about the following...
    1. Start in safe mode.
    2. Look for and uninstall any/all ATI programs/drivers.
    3. Look for and uninstall any/all NVIDIA programs/drivers.
    4. Install the correct BIOS for the nVidia card.
    5. Install the correct nVidia drivers for card.

BTW, I can not locate the correct driver for Dell PN 5U855 nVidia card on the nVidia website. However, I went to the Dell Support site and entered the service tag (2V94Z11) for the salvaged laptop. I can get to a driver's download page and I can see a BIOS driver and an nVidia driver for this nVidia GeForce4 440 Go card. I also noticed on the Dell download support page instructions that say the files are self-extracting, but I still have to go to "RUN ", type in the file location, and push enter. (C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r58746). I wonder if I did not install the BIOS for this card?

    Thanks

I would not disagree with your proposed plan of action, but think you can pass on the bios update having read the info on the Dell site.

Use the Dell driver as this may be specific to a Dell version of the card.

According to Dell the download is a self extracting .exe file which unzips the files to the folder path you mention. You then navigate to that folder and run setup.exe.

Hello. Perhaps I'm not reading something correctly here. I am having a problem removing the old ATI display application. I keep getting a "error initializing" warning message when I try to remove the ATI application. Can you tell me how to remove the old ATI software? Thanks.

    Howdy.

I did the google search. I reinstalled the ATI display software from the dell website. However, now when I go to uninstall it, I can't find the ATI Catalyst. I've tried right clicking on my desktop and looking in programs. It shows it in the add/remove programs of the control panel, but how do I run it?
