hi i was wondering if anyone could help me. my brother computer was giving a fault on his dvd disc drive, so i opened the computer up checked the cable even took them off then put them back on. we then gave it a quick clean to get rid of the dust.
when we started it back up it hung on the choices for boot , bios. once past that it looks for a cd , the only one that works is a repair disc. i can get to choosing the keyboard laungage. it seems that it is not finding the c drive but giving me an x drive. it is looking for a system image and when its not found you can only look for a driver.
i feel that it has lost the windows but with some help i can get it going again hopefully.
    thank you

    Hi Piper,

we're going to need a little more information...

You say the "computer was giving a fault on his dvd disc drive ", how exactly did this fault show itself (error messages, issues etc)?

When you opened the computer up did you take appropriate precautions (eg, absolutely no power and used anti static wrist straps)? Did you go anywhere near the hard drive cables?

Finally please provide as much information about the hardware in the computer as you can. System make/model. how much RAM, PSU details, Hard Drive model etc.

hi the fault with the dvd drive was that it just disappear about five minutes when windows was fully opened.
the make of the computer is a packard bell it had vista build into it. was upgraded so it would take windows 7 ican't tell you too much on the computer as i said it belonged to my brother. the hard drive is a samsung 160gb i think.
when cleaning the computerthere was no power on it. i just checked that the cables were fully connected and all i had out was the disc drive.
can i find all the details any where to help out.
    thank you

OK, still looking for more info but we'll get to that later). By the way "i think" just doesn't cut it on this board.

Please confirm make and model of the hard drive.

So not Samsung then :) (don't worry others will clearly remember I made the same mistake not once but twice in one thread )

First thing I would do is test the HD with Seagate diagnostics

Did you properly connect the hard drive ? Double check both data & power cables from both hard disk & motherboard ends.

hi done a seagate test and didn't show any drive so i opened it up and recheckecked all the cables and when i started the computer up it loaded to windows 7 with no problems.

i have tried starting the computer and shutting down 5 times and every time she starts a treat and also no problems with the disc drive.

    thanks for the help:D
