    IP Configuration

I have been looking through almost everything to find any discussion on the IP configuration that was available with W98SE.

It was possible to go into WINIPCFG and track whether or not you were making a connection to your DSL and NIC connections.

None of this seems to be available in XP Pro. Is there some other way to view this information in this operating system, if so, how is it done..

I thought that this was an important tool to use, You could determine whether your DSL was not working or if there was a problem within your own hook ups. I was surprised when I could not find anything in XP to compensate it.

See if this gives you the information you are looking for.

    Start > Run > cmd > Enter

At the command line type in netsh diag gui and press Enter.

The result takes a moment, so some machines produce the summary faster than others.

There may be another way to get to this diagnostic, but this is what I use.

    Thanks Kevin

I tried out your suggestion and it does work. It is reported differently, but it is much more than I had. I will play with it to see what I can glean from it.

    Thanks again

Another way of getting the same information as in Winipcfg is to use the command line utility IPCONFIG (which btw also is available in Windows 9x, basically WINIPCFG is just a gui for the IPCONFIG).

To use this you would do as you did to bring up the Network diagnostics window, i.e. Start > Run > cmd > ENTER and then just type ipconfig and press ENTER.

You can type ipconfig /? in order to see which switches are available and what they do.

    P.S.
Kevin, isn't the cmd a little redundant in your listing, shouldn't it be sufficient to just go Start > Run > netsh diag gui > ENTER ?

    Thanks Laage

I expanded on your suggestion and typed ipconfig/all and received a pretty full report of everything I had.

I really appreciate your input to my question. That I guess is what makes this site so valuable to the participants.

Thanks again..by the way..How is your name pronounced? I was in Sweden once and enjoyed your beautiful country..

Actually I'm danish, only living and working in sweden so my name has gone from its original german (3 generations back) pronounciation "laage" with a hard G, to the danish "lowé" (app.) with a stressed e at the end back to the german pronounciation in order for people here to be able to pronounce it :D

Kevin: I know what you mean, I usually have a command prompt open on the desktop just so I won't have to go the way of Start > Run or WindowsKey+R to do some trivial task :)
