I am not quite sure here what to do.
The Motherboard has two rear blue USB 3 ports.
The Internal BSB3 Combo 3½" All-In-1 Card Reader Writer + USB3 4-Port Hub has two USB cables, one to connect to a blue USB3 obviously for USB3 at the rear but it also has a black standard 9 pin USB2 connector.
What I am not sure of is, do I need to only connect the USB3 or do I also need to connect the USB2 to the motherboard.
    Plus the power naturally.
Is it nessesary to to also connect the USB2 since USB3 is also backward compatible with USB2.
    Anyone know.

hawk22, sincerely no idea as USB3 is too new.

But you can always experiment - just make sure that you don't connect anything which is of value to the new connectors.

Thanks rsinfo, yes I was actually thinking of that as well, just did not want to damage the unit itself.

    Yup, I understand.

But experiments define our lives [mine at least - if you are married you would understand :D]

Well, I did try, but it appears that the unit was faulty. I connected the blue USB3 on its own first. Unknown Device and would not recognize it.
Connect second USB 2 connector, and that one is for the Memory Card reader and that worked OK, but no USB3. Re-installed the USB 3 drivers from the Motherboard CD installed OK is showing in device manager OK but would not recognize the Hub. Device is not working and Windows stopped it, was the message I was getting. So tomorrow it goes back.

Hmm. A faulty unit - doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

    The experiment continues...

Do you have any update hawk?

Maybe you are left to decide. You know that some 2.5" external drives have an extra USB connector for power. You cannot attach one of those through a hub that is not self-powered. You can't attach several of those through hub that is not self-powered, you'll burn the USB port out on the computer.

I expect you could use the "twin" USB connectors to run a few small USB devices or say, any self-powered devices.

USB can run around 127 "daisy- chained" devices off one port. It depends on whether they draw power from the USB port or supply their own.

A USB 3 connector will work as USB 3 as long as both the computer port and the device are USB 3. (Probably something you already understand.) The extra connection/s will be for supplying more power.

Hi Matt, I have returned the unit and waiting for the replacement that should arrive any day now.
In regards to the connectors, the blue connector is for the USB3 Hub only, and the other normal USB connector is for the card reader and the Molex for power.
So all 3 connectors must be connected for the unit to work correctly.
I will make an update when I have the replacement installed.
