Dumb mistake! I uninstalled the keyboard from device manager, and restarted my computer without remembering I need it for the Windows Password! Am I *******?

Should've been on this forum earlier, I uninstalled the keyboard because the keyboard commands have been changed. I read somewhere else that this could help to restore keyboard command defaults.

Hi ljeanbeans. Does the keyboard work in Safe Mode? You could try booting into Safe Mode and logging into the built in Administrator account. Hopefully the account doesn't have a password on it. Is the keyboard USB or PS/2?

The keyboard was PS/2 before I unistalled it from device manager. The intention was to re-install it upon reboot, since that was an uninstall requirement.
A not-so-savvy computer user in the household had a bird when they accidentally found out that there may be keyloggers on the system...and threatened with unknown circle of hackers. Did notice that browser settings changed on their own one day....The default keyboard commands have been changed....
I don't know how to log into the built in Administrator Account...
All that I have is a wireless mouse and a usb keyboard.

Gosh I feel so stupid for doing this.....I was reading elsewhere how to log into the Administrator Account....but have no keyboard...
Just hoping that there is simple fix for this before others in the household know....like mouse commands or purchasing a wireless keyboard that I can somehow install from a different mode (but don't know how to access with a mouse)....

Okay, earlier I punched in Bypass Windows Password with Mouse into Google I came to a site that instructed how to use default administrator....this is only helpful if I can use just a mouse to get into the system....
I KNOW what the Windows Password is.

Thinking even a little harder (come on brain LOL), I bet there is a way to network my Windows 7 laptop to the XP tower and use that keyboard to type the password..........Um, maybe not...I've not done networking

If possible see if you can borrow a USB keyboard from a friend or relative and see if hooking that up to the system will allow you to enter the password at the login screen.

Thanks Evan...I want to try that and make a possible shopping list for when I go pick that up...
The right cord if it were possible to simply use my laptop's display or mouse to actually type the password...A way to make my logitech mouse usb communicate with another device i.e. keyboard?
    I was wrong before, I don't have a usb keyboard - it's standard corded.
You think, maybe, a usb keyboard would install drivers while the system has not been fully booted yet?

Probably will have to pay somebody to give me funny looks as I lean over them trying to understand the fix......
The XP tower has no wireless modem....I have not even created a sharing group with my 7 laptop....
    Suggestions before I go shop?

Fixed AND not shopping required! Just in the nick of time....You know, I read this "keyboard broke will usb keyboard allow me to login password" http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/windows-nt-2000-xp/threads/67931
And decided to try a reboot a couple times and punched F11 and delete and the password is recognized. The keyboard is installed and I punched in the password and Wallah!
Now onto the more perplexing task of understanding why cntl - alt - delete brings up no task manager....how to bring back defaults......
    THINK BRAIN THINK! LOL

Well thats good news. Glad you got the keyboard working again. Have you gotten task manager to work in Windows yet? If not is there an error message?

    Task Manager

The task manager comes up with the context menu from the task bar, but keyboard command for it doesn't work on the XP. There are more problems than this with the keyboard commands.
Going to search around on the forums and elsewhere and see what I find, and if I can't figure it out I will post a different thread.

    Tried it today

I swore I tried using keyboard commands last night after the keyboard automatically reinstalled itself before the computer fully booted...
It's good to know that an uninstalled vital device will be recognized by the OpSys as working hardware even when that system hasn't been fully booted.
But the trick of uninstalling the keyboard from device manager has done the trick....
The default XP keyboard commands are back in place and everything is as it should be :).
The problem I HAD is the same as this
    http://askville.amazon.com/change-keyboard-settings-default-keys-act-shortcuts/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=10395492
But the answer given there doesn't work....There is no "default" button, at least in this Op Sys XP Home version.
