I recently tried to install an update to my windows xp home edition, but when I tried to update the windows xp home to professional, it takes the cd key that I put in but wont complete the installation, it starts the set up when booting from the cd but stops part of the way through with the error lbrtfdc.sys corrupted, I was wondering if this means that the cd I have is not genuine.

    Hi bmike641, Welcome to WindowsBBS.:)

Have you tried Chkdisc or SFC /scannow? System Restore to a point before the update might be worth a try.

    Have you got SP3 installed?

Googling indicates this is a common problem without any real fixes. Faulty HD's and CD drives on some cases, but corrupt Registry seems very prevalent.

Could you enter your System Details as this will enable others to help you.
Go to Upper Left of screen > User CP > enter details > Save (scroll down to bottom of page)
    Cheers Neil.

You can't upgrade XP Home to XP Pro.... You should consider using the delete partition during the XPro install... Then recreate a partition and format..

@Neil I am not sure about what you are asking on the first question, but this is after recently having to format the hard drive, it had some bad spyware on it and wouldnt let me to start up the computer, in any mode so I just had the option of that.

the disk I used to reinstall did not have sp3, should I try downloading it to see if that makes a difference, I am not really sure how to go about this because I have little experience with working with computers.

    @Steve
I am not sure exactly what you are telling me to do, I have limited computer knowledge, which is why I was asking for help, I knew just enough to be able to reformat it.

Hi bmike641, You will need to give us the exact detail of what you did.

I read that you had a virus infection and did a Format.
You then reinstalled Windows XP Home?
You tried to install an Update - What was that? MS security patch?
You then tried to Update the OS from XP Home to XP Pro? (Steve has already stated you can't Upgrade Home to Pro)

When you Formatted - you obviously lost all info on the disc

You may have to do another Format and clean install of XP Pro.
I would then ensure that an AV software (Avast,AVG or MSE) is installed and then go to MS Updates and Download and install XP3.

Do you have a Legal CD of XP Pro? If so, you shouldn't have any problem providing you set BIOS to CD Drive 1st.

Let's know the answers and ask if there is more explanation needed.

If you Right click My Computer > Click on Properties > Tools > a window will show with Error Checking as first option. If you click on that it will ask whether you want to do this on the next Start of computer. > OK out and Restart comp. It will start the comp then go to the Check program. this will take some time - at least an hour - depends on the size of the drive. That was my first suggestion. Hope that answers your question. Neil.

I didnt realize I had the infection until I started having audio popups so I downloaded spybot s and d and went though several scan to clear out what was on the hard drive and I had to install an update for adobe flash player, after it installed the update, it needed to restart, so I had it restart and then after it started up, got to the loading screen for windows professional, which was a student version, and then it kept restarting part of the way through loading, so I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled with a boot disk that my sister (this was her computer before it was mine) gave to me to reinstall, I didnt know at that time that it wasnt the windows professional that was on this computer before, and since then I have been trying to put the professional disk onto the computer, the boot disk that I had only had sp1 on it. I didnt know that you couldnt update home to pro, which is my problem because it was trying to do that. So I will try a reformat to install pro.

I am unsure if it is the legal version because my mom bought one that she didnt know was not legal and I think that we switched the two and are not sure now where the other one is.

Hi bmike641, This is what I can read from your last Post.

    You did a Format.
Did you install the Motherboard Drivers?

When you Format - you lose all info on the Hard Drive - therefore after installing the OS (Windows XP) from CD - you will need to reinstall the M/B Drivers from the CD that came with the computer.

If your copy of XP Pro has a Product Key with it - you will be in business.

I'm not familiar with XP Student version. It may not have all the system programs as XP Pro, I am not experienced enough to be able to state that fact.

If it is a Legal XP Pro CD, it should install without problem.
What I have done when installing XP, is to put the CD in the drive, then Restart the comp so that it will boot from the CD.
Then you just follow instructions that appear on the screen as it installs.

Once it has Finalized installation you will need to ensure that your M/B drivers are installed and have a Anti-Virus program installed before you try and go to the Internet.

You will need to install all other Software that you want to use on the comp, but only after you get it working OK.

The Drivers that will be needed are for the Sound and Graphics and sometimes you need to go to the manufacturers site to Download them.
Unless there have been changes to the M/B if you have the original CD that came with the comp, the drivers should all be on that.

What is the make and model of the comp?
Hope this helps you to get sorted. Neil.

the computer is an IBM netvista 6790 21u I dont know anything about the software, this was a gift, and I think it was purchased as a floor model as is, its a refurb system I think, I know nothing about a original software cd, I checked the support website but I didnt know which one had to do with the m/b.

Hi bmike641, I've been away for R&R and sunshine. I did a Google and this is what I found:

    United States model specific features

    Model 6790-21U Processor Pentium 4 1.8GHz L2 Cache 256KB
    Memory 256MB Hard disk drive 40GB 7200RPM
    CD-ROM 48x Operating system Windows 2000
    Video nVidia Vanta 16MB

    External ports
    • Four USB (two in front; two in back) [Ver 1.1]
    • One ethernet RJ-45
    • Two serial 9-pin
    • One parallel (EPP, ECP), IEEE 1284 compatible
    • Keyboard and mouse ports
    • Audio line in, audio line out, and microphone in ports
3 Models Support Windows XP, 2000, NT Workstation and 98SE.
    Small Desktop
    Desktop
    MicroTower

The system may have pre-installed software. If it does, an operating system,
Device drivers to support built-in features, and other support programs are included.

If this is what we are talking about, please verify whether it's one of the 3 models.
As I said earlier, I see no problem with having done a Format that Windows XP Pro shouldn't instal. The problem will be the Motherboard Drivers.

It looks as though it was supplied new with an installed OS complete with Drivers. When you Format - you lose ALL info on the disc. You needed to copy the installed Drivers before the Format so that you could install them again.

Try the IBM or Lenova site to see if you can get the original Drivers would be my best suggestion. Neil.
