What is the history behind the problem?

Did you recently reinstall the operating system? If so - did you install the chipset and eithernet drivers from Dell?

    From a private message:

It sounds like the previous owner installed a fresh copy of Windows... Best guess is that the ethernet drivers weren't installed and therefore - no internet connection.... You could try calling the phone number you see and try to activate it that way...

Or you can look in the BIOS and make sure the Boot Order is set to boot off the CD rom....You could then install your Unused copy of XP... Odds are you'll need the drives for the ethernet card.

Hi i just read a thread related to this problem about "stop password expiration' which is exactly what the message says when i boot up this computer.I don't know if the previous owner had set a password or not but he is logged on as an administrator on this computer.Unfortunately i don't know his name other than his first name which is on the computer as the Adminastrator. How would i format this drive to do a re-install of xp?Its a Dell C400 Latitude laptop.Thanks.

Can you get into Control Panel > User Accounts > set up for you as Administrator.

Have a look in Device Manager and see if Network Adapters has an exclamation mark. Open and try Driver install. Cheers Neil.

As is suggested, if you can't connect to the internet (using Safe Mode with Networking), then one reason would be that the network adapter drivers aren't installed (correctly).

I suggest you go to the Dell website and look up the computer's webpage (by using the Service Tag). You can search there about the problem and get the relevant drivers if you need them.

Just one other area, which I found one time, was that the Network Adapter was disabled in the BIOS. I expect you connect to the internet using a networking (LAN) cable, where the cable connects to the computer you should see a set of flashing LEDs. Check those.
