I have MS XP connected to the internet via road runner high speed cable. Just recently I have been getting anywhere from 1 to 30 MS Internet Explorer Pop-ups on my computer at any given time. Everything from frying pans to catamarans, and even advertisers promising that if i send money they can get rid of "these annoying popups-forever" Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

On this same thread, couple of questions...

I found this thread and it seems to be the basic problem I need to solve. My boyfriend has XP (I am not ready to crossover yet, good ole 98SE) and he has continual pop ups (even when his browser window is shut). He is connected to his dsl provider via pppoe. Being that he is inserted into a network, I assumed it was the same problem. Since his configuration is not integral to any network we tried the solution offered here in administrative tools and rebooted the computer. Becuase he is also having related problems with "promulgate universal" (which is related to a spyware known as delfin) we removed the delfin program. I thought that the ads might be related to the spyware. Upon removal- the ads still pop up of their own avail. He has the worthless Norton Antivirus (sorry folks- I am TrendMicro all the way- Even updated pattern filles missed js gigger and js noclose on his computer- removed completely by trendmicro's free housecall utility on the net here -ever see Norton offer any help for free? ) which has failed to protect him, but Housecall should have shown any other virus... I simply have never heard of having your browser shut (he uses IE v 6.0) and waking up in the morning to 50 popups. The fix you have suggested here, we have tried.. What else can I do? Get him to install a spyware removal utility? Is it XP? Is it part of using PPPoe connections? I have static IP right now, so I am not familiar with his problems. (soon will have to since DIRECTVInternet's demise) Thanks for all your help.....

Still on the same thread, but no replies yet?

 I usually get really good fast help on this site, maybe something I said went over wrong? I am truly at a loss about this popup situation, but I have more information, maybe I can garner some enthusiasm. I have done the ad-ware thing by lavasoft and there are absolutely no scumware apps on this computer. I have disabled windows messenger on this xp professional os. I have installed a good popup killer (works like magic on my pc). Still, every morning he wakes up to 50+ popups stacked on his pc window. (also, no viruses- absolutely sure) Interestingly, when he restarted his pc last night it said that IE v6 was still running and had to be shut down. This is even though task manager said it was not running and his browser had been closed for quite some time. Is it possible (I am just an intermediate, I do not know) to put your foot in a window and keep it open? Thus allowing the popups to keep coming through? Is the messenger the only thing that does this on xp? I know it is disabled. What are the other possibilities in this situation. I am at wit's end! Please help me (grovel, beg)!:(

    Thanks for the reply!

:) I will let you know how that works. I have not tried zone alarm or another product on this problem- has anyone had any experience with that? Thanks!

I use Zone Alarm v. 2.6 on my XP Home machine (as well as the one running 98) and have never had a problem with it. I have, however, had problems with newer versions of ZA on both 98 and XP systems.

First, check that the computer having popup problems is running at least XP built-in firewall. It does apparently stop things from coming in but it won't stop anything going out, so there might be some particularly obnoxious spyware or a trojan "calling home" through a standard port and receiving the popups.

After you run Spybot, I'd recommend turning off XP's firewall and installing ZA...if for no other reason than to find out what, if anything, is hammering to get out. You can get v. 2.6 from Old Version if you'd rather not mess with the rather bloated newer versions of ZA.

    Thank you, will do...

That is great information and a great site! I didn't know about it, I added it to my favorites. About the XP firewall, where would I find that. I am a 98SE girl, myself, and don't know much about XP so if you could tell me the string I would appreciate it. I had someone today recommend that ZA would tell me exactly that, if something was trying to call home. For that reason alone it would be a useful diagnostic. I am going to try it this weekend (he is out of state) and will post the result. Sooner or later those pernicious popups will eat dirt. Thanks for the help! :D

    Spybot killed the popups!

:D Yes! Thank you! Spybot got rid of all of them! (for now, anyway) there was a teen-s*x dialer that was on there that was dialing home saying bring it on, and then some, probably. But, now it is all clean. Had fun with my boyfriend about how that got on there, but who knows really, right? Thanks again!:)
