    Did not remove tools yet. Just in case.
    Installed IE8 and it hasn't crashed.
    Did a registry clean.
    Ran defrag. It took over 4 hours; it never took over an hour before.
    Startup time to the welcome screen is down from 2 min to 1½ min. It used to be 10 - 15 sec.
    Desktop comes right up, but the CPU is still spending up to 95% of the time on hardware interrupts for 5 min.

    Never ever do this. Surely I didn't ask you to do it.
    Registry cleaners/optimizers are not recommended for several reasons:

    • Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

      The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
    • Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry ". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.
    • Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.
    • Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.
    • The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results ".
    Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

    ===================================================

    Reset restore points manually.
    Turn system restore off.
    Restart computer.
    Turn system restore on.

    ===================================================

    Run OTL "Cleanup ".
    If it doesn't work delete all tools manually.

    ====================================================

    That may be a sign of falling hard drive.

    Check Primary and Secondary IDE settings: Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Primary or Secondary IDE Channel -> Properties -> Advanced Settings. Look at the Current Transfer Mode field.
    See, if it's in PIO mode instead of DMA mode.

    I'd also....

    Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28744&hl=hard+drive+diagnostic)
    Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
    Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
    If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
    For Toshiba hard drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Pa...rivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

    Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE

    System Restore cleared and back on.
    Cleaning tools removed.
    Transfer Mode set to DMA if available. Current setting was PIO.

    That was the reason for "hardware interrupts" going crazy.

    How is CPU usage now?

    Did you run hard drive diagnostic?

    I went as far as downloading the iso file. I didn't have the time to devote to finishing and I didn't want to install any software until I had a couple of good system restore points.
    What is a good utility to copy the C drive onto an external drive for use in changing the hard drive?

    .The quote is messed up, but you should be able to find my responses.

    Make sure you completed all steps from my reply #39.

    As for imaging a hard drive...

    I did #39.
    Ran PSI and it patched a number of things.
    Next I am replacing the wounded hard drive.
    Last time I did this was on a Win95 machine with 2 internal drives. It was quick and easy with Partition Magic.
    Will Acronis save the image to my external drive where I have a partition reserved for this purpose?
    Does Acronis specifically address drive replacement?

    New drive is in and all is well.
    Thank you for all your help in cleaning up the mess.
    Lesson learned: when daughter and grand daughter visit and want to use the computer, make sure their hands are tied behind their backs.
