I use Norton Internet Security. I go to its main screen and turn off everything that is there (maybe 10-12 items) and use the "until system restart" criterion. However, using process explorer, I still see Norton/Symantec processes popping up and doing something. How can I suspend all of these Norton-related processes? I want to see if Norton is slowing down some large file copying that seems to run rather slow.

Hi Paul. Try stopping the Norton services and see if that will shut it down. To do this click Start< Run and type services.msc and hit enter. When the serices window opens look for any Norton or Symantec Services. (You can use Process Explorer to help you identify what the names of the Norton services are)

Highlight each service that you find, right click it and select properties. When the properties window opens click the stop button to stop the service. Then click Ok to close the properties window. Repeat this process for each Norton service and/or Symantec service.

Note: On some machines that I have worked on, I have found it impossible to actually fully shut down Norton and all if its support processes. The only sure way of ensuring that Norton isn't running is to fully uninstall it. Its a bit of a hassle but it works. You can then reinstall it if you want it active again on your system.

I didn't know about the services window. Lots of stuff in there. However, only one entry related to Norton Internet Security. Even when run as administrator, it would not allow me to stop or pause the application. I guess I will just do the various disables from the Norton control screen.

Since its been about a week I wanted to know were you able to suspend Norton successfully or did you have to uninstall it?

To be able to stop & start the Norton services you must first go to Norton settings and disable "system protection ". That system protection feature is there to prevent malware & viruses from stopping Norton.

Norton Settings has about 6 sub-menus each of which has as many as 20 individual features. Nothing there seems to be equivalent to "system protection." The tray icon has a disable firewall and a disable antivirus setting. These seem to disable most stuff, though Norton-related processes still spring to life as determined by Process Explorer. I guess I'll settle for the two disable settings when needed and not worry about the rest. I guess switching to another less invasive product may be the answer.

Since these self-starting processes are more of an annoyance than a show-stopper, I guess I'll consider this thread "resolved" for the immediate future.

It's called Norton Product Tamper Protection. Then you must kill all Norton processes using Task Manager. Those that won't kill are services, for those use Services tool.

Sure enough, it's there. I turned off tamper protection. I then killed the only Norton-related process. I then went to the services tool, found the NIS service, but the "stop" option was greyed out so I couldn't kill it. Using Process Explorer, I noticed Symantec Service Framework was still consuming CPU but I got "access denied" when I tried to kill it.

    Norton is very tenacious.

Yeah the only way that I've found to disable Norton entirely is to completely uninstall it.

When I've messed with Norton on clients computers I've never been able to fully disable it since it has all of those 'protective' features aimed at preventing malware from disabling it. Even with disabling the UI and the system protection processes associated with it there are those pesky Norton services that you can't terminate. So I normally don't mess with trying to disable it and just uninstall it even if I have to reinstall it later.

In services, set the services to "disabled" and reboot.
