    See my previous posts.
This is a problem I need an answer to. Do I have to buy a new sound card?

Everything is working but the sound. Upgraded hard drive and O/S to W2K. No sound, drivers not working.

Removed the sound card, replaced in the slot. Rebooted W2K, it stated "found new hardware" but didn't install. So I went to the list. Chose VIA -- W2K message: installing this device driver is not recommended bec Win cannot verify...compatible.

Okay, chose "have disk" for the Asound 4000. Same message.

So does this mean I need a sound card that's W2K compatible ONLY. Seems like it.

Any recommendations what brand I should go for?

I take it after you got that warning you did not install the drivers you had for the sound card. If they are the right drivers for your sound card (2000 drivers) I would install them anyway and see what happens. I got a warning like that in XP when I went to put my drivers in for my camera. The camera's website said the driver worked with XP but when I went to install it I got a warning like you got. I installed the driver anyway. It did not cause any problems with my system.

Guess you have two threads going on the same topic now. This one answered one of my earlier questions posted in the other one. You can find your drivers here:
    http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads11/10215.html

Your card is Win2K compatable, but you might want to flip over to the other thread and read my post there re: on-board disabled question. You should also check any MB jumpers because you also had a problem with your old 98 installation that was never addressed.

If you are spending an inordinate amount of time on this, Fdisk, format and install Win2K with nothing but your video card in there. You know this is going to take less than an hour and your system comes up clean. Note: my earlier comments on this were never disputed - the reply was that when one did the same thing twice they got the same result twice - prolific, huh? You may also find a re-read my11/18 and 11/25 posts to be helpful.

    ;)

At 1 a.m. this morning I ordered a new sound card

There's a HCL list and the sound card and modem weren't listed as W2K compatible, so I ordered a new sound card. If it don't work, I'll send it back.

[I don't feel like messing with this anymore. I just hope the new devices I'm ordering works]

    That is very good news.

    Thanks for letting us know.

Did 2k recognize it and install drivers or did you have to add the drivers later ?

Yes W2K went ahead and did it!

The old sound card, ALS4000, apparently wasn't W2K compatible. I went online to the HCL list for W2K and bought the Crystal sound card. Installed it and immed. W2K found it and it's working!

Next--the MODEM! and the Digital Cam!

    Another piece of good news.

That is the way it should be.

Good luck with the Modem and the Digital Cam.
