I looked at the historical log (on my Vista machine) from running Windows Update over the past three years. Of the hundreds of updates, nearly all show as Successful except about 5-6 show as Cancelled. None of these show up later as Successful. If these cancelled updates were needed, I would expect they would be offered up again with the next check for updates and then, if installed, would show up as successful. My plan going forward is to do what I have been doing, namely, install all of the "important" updates and make a best guess about those shown as optional. I won't do anything for the items in the log that show as Cancelled. Is this sensible?

I think so. The updates may have been covered in a Service Pack upgrade.

You should see their KB number, so you should be able to research their origin/purpose at the MS Knowledgebase if you want to investigate that closely.

If you visit Windows Update & don't get offered any updates, you should be good to go.

Great. I'll rely on Windows Update to keep track of what is needed.
