    Hi all,

    Here is what I did:
I have a Compaq Evo E610N with windows xp pro. My wife also wants a computer, so I got one ( exactly the same as I have ) from
E-Bay. The hard drive was empty. So I cloned it with my hard drive. All went well and I now have two identical computers.
I then downloaded Windows XP Product key modifier and typed in the key that was on the bottom of my wife’s computer and after clicking on "change key" it gets me to the registration screen for windows. I click on activate over internet and it comes back with "you misspelled the key, fix it and try again." I check and the key is correct. It won’t let me activate. So I click on" activate over the phone. It gets me the phone number and a string of numbers.
I call and read of the numbers and the voice tells me I have a key that is not valid. I forgot the reason why. He also gives me a website from MS that I should visit for help, but I did not write it down.
Any one know of a phone number that I can call to get this resolved?
Where I can talk to a real person?

    Thanks

    Sven

You're SOL here Sven, best action is to Contact Microsoft to resolve the issue. We cannot help you with this.

    Wildfire,
I was tying to contact MS, but only have automated phone numbers and the website tells me the same thing that i know. all is automated. nothing helps me. that is why i was asking for a number with a person on the other end to help with this. I did not ask any one to help me break the law, just a phone number to fix this.
    Thanks
    Sven

No problem SVEN, I wasn't suggesting you were trying to break the law. The only other things I can suggest is trying a fresh install with any disks that originally came with your (the original) system, contacting compaq/hp to see if they can help or borrowing an OEM XP disk from someone else.

Just to be clear though, cloning your HD to another system doesn't only affect the operating system, there may be other software which you aren't entitled to use on more than one computer.

understood, all my laptop is doing is, i take it on the road when i go out of town, so i can get my E-Mail and get on the net. that is done in XP. the only othre software i have is Open Office and that is free. All the other stuff like quicken and so on is only on my home desktop computer. the laptops are only for playing, the real work is done on my desktop. Thanks for the reminder anyways.

I see if HP can help me.
    Thanks
