    Hi All,

Have just migrated from XP to Win7. In the start/search window of W7 when I enter a search word and I go to one of the results it is not quite what I was looking for it seems there is no way of returning to my original search. I basically have to start over again and retype my search request.

Is this the way it will always be or is there a way to retain my original search input when I return to the search window? Thanks, TRoof

I think that's the way it is, I've never found a solution. Win7 is a very poor substitute for XP.

Wait 'til you try System Restore, Windows Backup, Imaging, and Defrag. It's a hundred steps back, zero forward (esp SR).

Hi ChrisW. Thanks for the warning of things to come. I guess I will close this thread before others chime in with more bad news. I have used XP for years and skipped Vista and now immersing myself in Win7. The battle begins. Do I see a reload of WinXp in my future?

BTW for the time being, I also am in N New Mexico Takes us a bit longer to get into the 21st century.

Why are you using System Restore. That should be used as a last resort for fixing a problem.

Hi MrBill. I think what CrisW was doing was getting me ready for things to come if ever I had the need to use any of the above Win7 features i.e. Restore, Win Backup, etc. Not as a solution to something that was a part of XP search and now not included in Win 7 search. Thanks, TRoof

Some of those things are hardly ever used. I have never used System Restore. It isn't a cure all. Lots of people think it is. I have probably used the Search feature a dozen times in 15 years or so.
I had 98SE and finally made the upgrade to XP. Best thing I ever did. Then about a year or so ago, I bought a copy of Win7 Pro and put it on another HD in the same PC that has XP on it. I hardly go back to XP anymore. Got 4 other PC's that the grandkids get on and they are all XP. Feel pretty comfy with both of them. Worked on a 98 a couple of months ago and had to put on my thinking cap if you know what I mean.

Good luck on what ever you 2 decide to do.

To make a long story short, Microsoft has yet to get the search function right. For the best results on search use the free program called Agent Ransack. It can't be beat (for free).

I'd vouch for Agent Ransack. They even have a 64-bit version.

I've never used Windows "native" search, so don't normally comment on it ;)

I have added Agent Ransack as my main search.

So far a much better alternative to the native windows search. Thanks for the tip.

I guess I am not the only one that finds the native search in Windows 7 lacking. And they pay these people how much?

    Thanks all.
