Hi everyone new to this forum from the UK computer is a pain at the moment hope somone can help. I have a desktop computer which is getting on abit but I would like to keep it runing as long as possible. My system is 10 years old 20 gigabyte memory and 640 meg of ram using Windows XP Professional service pack 2. My system was basically getting slower and slower and I sought help from 'Help with Windows' site and followed instructions to clean up hard drive. Unfortunately since then I can't use Windows Microsoft office 2003 as it starts to load but I do not have privilages to run. I think I now have a missing file or something corrupt. I thought I'd reinstall XP from CD but computer will just not have it. The OS CD sometimes loads and if it does it just won't reinstall and I don't have a backup boot disk. I also can't reconnect to the net using a wireless connection. Any ideas would be great. Thanks

Microsoft Office 2003 or any version is not part of Windows XP or any version of Windows. You just need to reinstall Office and not Windows. If you are still using SP2, you are playing Russian Roulette with your system. You need to update it to SP3. SP2 is not supported anymore for critical updates.

Hi MrBill, Thanks for letting me know about MS Office 2003. I am not sure where this MS office package came from then as I don't have a installation disk. I had Windows '98 and installed XP about 4yrs ago will no problem. I am running out of memory so computer so slow thats why I tried to delete certain files as suggested in the Help with Windows site. I did get an error message about couldn't find the SKUO11.CAB file when word 2003 loads. I thought if I just did a clean reinstall XP would be back to normal.

XP would be, but you would not have and MS Office files on there. You could always download Open Office which is similar to MS Office. It is FREE.

If you can still get into XP, before you do anything, you need to save your address book and also your favorites and anything else you need. You can't save a program. Just the data.

I think a little clarification would be of benefit here .....

What is the state of the computer right now - does it boot up and can you run XP albeit very slowly?
In your original post you said ....
which suggests that you have an XP CD. Is this a retail copy?

As a sidenote I very much doubt that your computer would run anything later than XP and it is struggling to do that.

    You posted ....
    and then you posted ....
Not clear if you have the installation CD or not.

The difficulties you are experiencing re. trying to reinstall from your CD's suggests a possible problem with the CD drive, which would not be unusual in a computer of that age.

On the basis that the computer boots up can you read other data CD's

If it does not try cleaning out the drive by blowing a shot of compressed air into the drive to remove any build up of dust.

Perhaps a laser lens cleaner may help you out. It is a CD with a very soft brush mounted on it where it gently gets dust off of the CD/DVD laser lens.

Thanks to any advice given, I was just trying to log exactly what is happening with my OS to give more info but halfway through my computer sarted making funny noises amd now it won't load properely, I can only assume its the hard drive making a loud clicking or tapping noise and very slow in starting. So this is another problem I have got now its probably had its last legs!

    Thanks

Open up the computer and see if you can tell where the noise is coming from.

Hi, Sorry for delay I do have a system disc but I'm afraid this won't load properely either. Some CD's will load others won't. I have tried cleaning cd drive and the windows xp is working and no noises! However it has been suggested for me to use Linux instead. I think my problems might have been related to the XP OS not being genuine. I'll see how Linux goes as this is free and if I need anymore help I will contact this site.

    Many thanks
