Yes Loreen we will do that when you get back!

When we do we will begin with the 98s, make sure they see only each other first!

Don't change anthing onthe XP yet!

    Good trip!

Hi again Mike & others. I am back from my trip and have managed to get and successfully install XP Pro (at least I think I was succesful, everything seems to be working fine).

Can we try again to set this network up properly. Program files on Familyroom computer still greyed out.

    Thanks, Lorreen

OK Mike, here goes. 3 puters. XP Pro =familyroom, 98=kidsroom, 98=sewingroom. I have shared all C drives on all computers. I can access C drives on the KIDSROOM & SEWINGROOM computers from all machines (all be it in round about ways.) But still can't access FAMILYROOM when I try it tells me "access denied." Can we just start afresh and clear off all info? Can you tell me how to do that on both the 98 & XP Pro machine.

It was so much easier when I had the 98's hooked up. I just had the C drives shared and they allowed me to access anything I wanted. Now I have this huge list of stuff that is shared and I have to sift through to figure out where I want to go.

Here's hoping you're on line right now because I have all day to play with it and hopefully clean this up.

    Thanks, Lorreen

Ok lets take it one step at a time!

Remember I can not see any of them! I don't know what you ment by various ways.

But I think you mean you have to browse. We will get back to this!

    First workgroups

    on the w98 machines
    Rt click network neighborhood-properties- identifcation.
Make certain that the workgroup is exactly the same on both

on the XP hold down the windows flag key (beside ctrl and alt keys) and tap the pause-break key (far rt top row). This will bring up system properties.

Click network identification, click properties (I hope you did not even install a Domain these are only used in large networks of other networks of computers) put a dot in workgroup and make it match the 98 machines. Xp will want to reboot for this to go into effect!

Now back to the 98 machines! Back to network properties confirm that file and printer sharing is installed and that both files and printers are marked as shared.

Then make sure Client for microsoft networks is installed click it and remove any check in logon validation. Below this put the dot in quick logon!

All this will cause you to need to reboot to come into effect! XP does not have to reboot for every little change like win98. But both will tell you when they need to reboot.

On Xp after above reboot do same flag key to get to network and run the wizard make sure it has correct workgroup, as you proceed tell it you are connecting to a lan. When it says you now need to do something on the other computers just exit, this is all we need to do!

On XP reread my other messages and review turning off simple file sharing and confirm it is in fact off! And if so share drive C:

Last thing for now! Make absolutly sure the in the accounts you created in XP have the exact usernames and exact same passwords as the ones you are using on the 98 machines!

Make sure to log oof of both 98 machines then back on using the correct usernames and passwords that are on XP.

Enough for now do homework! May leave for short errands but back soon!

All I need to know is what everything sees after this! Only that they show in the network! We will get to the way you connect next!

We hope each computer does see each of the others!

    Mike

    mflynn your help is appreciated!

After spending a frustrating day trying to network one Win98SE machine with two Win2K ones, it finally occurred to me that I've always found the answers to my problems at this site (can't remember my login name before the creeps crashed the place). Wish I'd come back here 8 hours ago. No problems on our computers for over a year (at least nothing that GoBack couldn't fix).

I see that I'll be able to make that 98 machine work with some tweaks and logins and workarounds BUT...

Would I be better off upgrading that 98 machine to Win2K to match the other two? Or XP Pro (seems a waste to "upgrade" to older technology than what's currently available)?

And thank you all... this home computer is a Dell less than one month old (with XP Home) and I'll be contacting Dell to see about upgrading it to Pro after reading this thread.

    Phil

No, no real reason to upgrade the 98 just to network.

By the way Phil and everyone else. After seeing Lorren struggle with this I offered to let her call me at home. After she upgraded to XP Pro we had it going in 20-30 minutes.

Took several settings and reconfiguration on all three computers.
