I must have some corrupted files as windows 7 explorer can't load desktop or start menu. I have tried to back up my files using the system restore and recovery methods but that doesn't work either. I have an external hard drive I could save my files to if I could get a window to see them both. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    Welcome aboard.

The sure shot way of recovering your data from such situation is to boot from a Linux live cd & copy your data.

I recommend Ubuntu but you can take your pick from hundreds of others.
