I cannot find details of the write/read speed of both these devices.
I have a Netbook PC and want to use one mainly just to backup a limited amount of data (about 2Gb).

I have used a USB memory stick in the past but don't like continually removing and re inserting the stick every time I pack up the laptop and place it back into the carry bag. I then considered using an SD card which I can leave plugged in as it does not protrude like a USB memory stick does.

Any comments on using an SD card for backing up? How do both these devices compare regarding write speed?

For 2Gb of data I don't think speed would a concern jparnold. Other benefits such as sharing between other devices (camara's/mobiles etc) or as in your case leaving the SD card inserted are likely to be more important.

    Thanks for the fast response.

The memory card is to be used solely for backing up a limited amount of data on the notebook such as my documents and also my email folders and is not to be shared with other PCs. I will also keep a USB memory stick containing data which will be used very infrequently such as application install files in case anything ever becomes corrupted and I have to re-install.

Looks like I would be ok using an SD card left plugged in.

That's what I do, though I tend to write application set up files to DVD rather than a memory stick.

I would have marked this post as resolved but as it was only posted one hour ago I was seeing if anyone else had other opinions.
    Anyway I will close it.

No problem, but as you can see by my reply you can't close a thread and others can still offer opinions in resolved threads ;)

If you leave the SD card plugged in and the netbook is lost/stolen your backup is gone too :(

I agree withh you Pete, just to clarify in my case I also do an image backup to an external HD and every so often DVD's, if I lost my laptop it'd be a hassle but it's unlikely I'd lose any important data.

jparnold, as Pete suggested I hope you have other backup strategies in place.

My laptop is only used when I tour (rarely at home). Also it does NOT have an inbuilt CD/DVD drive - that is the reason why I would have installation programs stored on a USB memory stick rather than using the original CD/DVD.

I don't really want to do a full backup of my system only data which may change such as email folders, (Word) documents and perhaps also photos (although I would also have these stored on the memory card(s) used in the camera as well as the laptop hard drive) more importantly any pictures which I may have decided to enhance with Paint Shop Pro along the way.

I do not use the laptop for business purposes and only use a simple backup utility (FbBackup).
