Can anyone tell me why lines of text suddenly run vertically down the page when I'm typing? What can I do to avoid this?

P.S. I'm using Word 2010 on an HP Pavilion PC with Windows 7.

    Don't have 10, but in 03

Click on "Format" on the toolbar

Select "Text Direction" from the drop-down menu.

    Choose the orientation you desire.

    Click "OK ".

Mr.Bill, This Thread made me have a look in and your reply made me open my MS Word 2003 and look under Format. Here's a query - Drop Cap, Text Direction and Object - are Greyed out in my Word???

How do they become active and what caused Queuedecotons text to go vertical???

This could be a good learning day. Neil. (Septuagenarian):D

Unfortunately I don't have 03 any more and the fancy new toolbar in 10 requires many extra steps to use. Format doesn't seem to be one of them. I do miss 03. I also miss XP.
Windows 7 doesn't do a thing for me. But thanks anyway for your suggestion. Maybe it's somewhere in one of my books.

BTW - this doesn't happen at my bidding at all; it just happens period.

Queuedecoton, I read your Post and I assume that as you typed the words, they went vertical down the margin - correct?
    eg.
    N
    e
    i
    l

When I tried Mr.Bills answer - it moved the text from horizontal to vertical - reading from the bottom up.

I'm still wondering how you started your problem. There has to be an order/command to get vertical print. Neil.

    Yes, your example is perfect.

I can't remember doing anything different from my usual typing. I wonder what key or combination of keys I could have hit that would suddenly switch from horizontal to vertical.
