    yahoo site

Am checking out xxcopy on the Yahoo site. I do okay with the network stuff except that to do the job i had to buy a card for the laptop... and it didn't even have drivers for WinME. had old stuff... anyway, this has been an experience! will let you know the final outcome. Barb

    Well...this is what happened.

I connected the laptop to the network and did the xxcopy /clone /source /target ( and included a folder realizing it only wiped out what was in the folder....)
Then I Installed new the HD & installed WinME. In order to get the files copied back to the laptop I must have xxcopied them 4 times. I knew the worst that would happen is that I'd have to reinstall everything.

I finally did the xxcopy back to the new C:\ drive and surprisingly enough many of the settings are still there.

Now don't get me wrong...I still have some drivers to reinstall and some cleaning up to do, but all in all, it's encouraging to say the least.

So again, I thank you for your expertise and support and encouragement!
    :D :D

Barb, Thanks for the report. I'm glad that you had a degree of success. It would have been a cake walk if you were cloning Win9x since it doesn't object to being written over while it's actively booted. The later systems, although still possible, aren't so easy. You really gotta know some hot licks. That leaves a market niche for the Instant Recovery, Ghost, and Drive Image types.

I still use xxcopy for some chores in XP but my cloning is all done with IR and DI. I love 'em both!

Perhaps what you learned will help somewhere else so it won't all be for naught.

    Best regards. :)

I use HDCopy.exe a simple one task Hard Disk copier.
I is very slowwwwwwww, but it is free and copies an entire
hard disk (or hard disk partition) to another Hard Disk or to
    another hard disk partition.

I've used XXcopy and it is very powerfull, but sifting though the instructions was painfull (maybe evident by some of the posts here), even though my DOS isn't bad (I've loaded drivers without a monitor/video).
Have also used HDcopy, very good if you can get it without fumbling around in German websites.
Found what seems to be a simple to use program.
    Xclone
    Easy to use DOS instructions....Hurrah!

Another great tool. While working on the laptop was a royal #$*Y@($Y* if you get my drift, it has proved quite beneficial. I've met some nice people and found out about some real good tools. thank you!

Has been very beneficial for me. Do battle with DOS and come out a winner is gratifying. Good info here. My thanks as well.

I found another tool although this does not clone but would have been a big help... a USB to USB file sharing cable. I guess I must be in the dark about many things but I bought one as another method to "get the job done "!

We use Ghost 7.5 here at work.

We use win98 boot disks with network card drivers and connect up to a network drive where we have our images. I then ghost up or down an image to or from a PC or Laptop.

Newt's reply to this POST is quite similar to what we use.
