Not computer related but my TV's went all weird. Switched it on this morning and I get what I can only describe as a circular rainbow effect (purples on the inside drifting out to greens/yellows on the outside).

The actual picture is still visible and if you take off the rainbow coloured spectacles is still watchable. Obviously something magnetic has gone wrong with the tube. Just wondering if it's worth getting it sorted (or even a quick fix :praysmilie:)?

I know LCD's are cheap enough nowadays but I'm on an extremely tight budget.

Any advice/ideas?

I have/had a Sony 31" CRT TV that is also HD..... Its so freaking big I can't move it by myself.... Anyway, everyone I talked too said not to bother trying to get the power supply or start up issued fixed. My Sony cost a $1000 dollars five years ago and even if it "only" cost $200 to repair - it'd still be an old TV and no telling what might break next year...

Course that sounded OK to me since I wanted a 42" LCD;)

You don't need to call somebody for that.

Most of the TV's had demagnetizing coils which would demagnetize the CRT when its switched on. Try switching it on/off a few times.

Also check if you have kept some magnet [speakers etc.] near the TV.

LOL, I just knew somebody would suggest that. Sorry rsinfo, already tried, being used to the IT world "have you tried turning it off and back on again" was the first thing that sprang to mind. And no the only speakers near the set are those built in.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

@Steve, mine is a similar size and I imagine weight. It looks like it's heading out the door though but I'll let it rest overnight to see if it recovers. Failing that or any other suggestions then a tuner for the laptop is on the cards until I can afford a new set :(

You have to switch it off/on a few times for it to work.

On my CRT TV, it always used to work after 10-12 times.

It's been switched off/on (by mains not standby) half a dozen times over the last 3-4 hours, but I'll give it another few goes and let you know.

You must do it over a period of 3-4 minutes & not over 3-4 hours.

no go rsinfo, switched on/off a dozen times by mains, and then again another dozen switching to standby (using the remote) no change.

I'll let it sleep until tomorrow and if it doesn't behave then it's getting evicted :(

Our 29 inch Samsung CRT packed up about 18 mths ago. Could only get Picture in Picture - centre of screen remained blank. Nearly suffered a hernia taking it to our Council Rubbish tip where they have a section called Trash Palace.

This is where we can dispose of unwanted household items environmentally.
Please do the 'Greenie trip' wildfire or will you offer it on Ebay?

We did the update - 42 inch Plasma with all the goodies. We're ready for the World Cup (Rugby). Cheers Neil.

The TV degaussing may not be working. I used to degauss mine using my hand-held tape degausser. If you want to chance $60 you could buy an external degausser

Or you could put the money toward that new 50" flat screen you deserve.

Are these degaussing coils still available ? I was under the impression that they went the way of dodo.

Sorry to hear about your terribly ill TV :D, as a rule, when you have speakers that are not magnetically shielded sitting to close to your CRT TV the purple haze is on the outside of the screen, and if left for too long permanent.
Your description though does not appear to be a magnetization problem.
Neither is it a color gun failure as these can be fixed for short term by reloading them been there more than once.
I would not know the situation in your country (Scotty) but down here you can pick up CRT TV's for free saves people having to pay to take them to the Tip.
This is how I got rid of my 67cm TV, and it was in perfect working order, told my wife the Doctor said I need a 50" Plasma from Panasonic, she loves it that much I am watching my favorite shows on the computer with a 22" Monitor :mad:. Hope you learn something from that.

Bohemian Rhapsody was and always will be the best single ever IMO, when Freddie died the world lost a legend :(
