I disabled my AV and firewall then opened OTL. Right when it opened a log file opened. I guess it saved even though my computer BSOD. I ran the program again anyways.

    Your computer is clean :)

    1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll create fresh, clean restore point, using following OTL script:

    Run OTL

    • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following:

    Code:
    :OTL
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
    [Reboot]
    • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
    • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
    • Post resulting log.

    2. Now, we'll remove all tools, we used during our cleaning process

    Clean up with OTL:

    • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
    • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
    • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
    • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

If you still have any tools or logs leftover on your computer you can go ahead and delete those off of your computer now.

    3. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

    4. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

    5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

    6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

    7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

    8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

    9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

    10. Run defrag at your convenience.

    11. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

    12. Please, let me know, how your computer is doing.

The Security Check log says my Java and Firefox are out of date. Is it supposed to say that? In Firefox I clicked on Help\About Firefox\ then clicked the box "Check for Updates" and it says it's up to date. For Java I navigated to My Computer\Control Panel\Java\Update\ and clicked the box "Update Now ", but that feature no longer works and crashes now. Do I have to manually download Java now for new versions? You say my computer is clean, so there was no malware/virus found during all these scans? My BSOD problem is hardware/software related then?

Here is my OTL log for resetting system restore:

    You're fine.

    We cleaned some garbage.

Yes, BSODs are still happening. GMER, DDS, and Combofix were never able to run successfully following the instructions given. Should we get those 3 programs to run somehow?

    Let's run one more scan.

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

    • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
    • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
    • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
    • Click OK.
    • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
    • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay? ".

    Looks clean as well.

In this forum, we make sure, your computer is free of malware and your computer is clean :)
Because the access to malware forum is very limited, your best option is to create new topic about your current issue, at Windows section.
    You'll get more attention.

Why do you think GMER, DDS, and Combofix were not able to run successfully on my computer?

Since no malware was found on my computer should I still download WOT (Web OF Trust) and Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI)?

We ran RKUnhooker successfully, which is GMER substitute and we ran OTL, which is DDS substitute.
As for Combofix, I'm not sure. Possibly, because of some other issues.
    Maybe connected to your BSODs.

Yeah, go ahead with those two programs.

Combofix has left some files in my C:\ there is no file extension but the icon for the files is the same icon as the "My Computer" icon. There is also a boot.bak file. Is there a certain way I'm supposed to delete these or can I just drag them to the Recycle Bin?

    Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run [Vista users, go Start> "Start search"]
    Type in:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Note the space between the "Combofix" and the "/Uninstall "
Click OK (Vista users - press Enter).
    Restart computer.

    You can delete boot.bak file.

It says "Windows cannot find 'Combofix'." Maybe it didn't install all the way because it would BSOD in the middle of the scan?

    You can delete "symbols" folder.
As for the others, they're not created by our tools.
Ask that question and Windows forum.

For the others I'm pretty sure it is from Combofix. I renamed combofix.exe to my name and those files appeared after running Combofix.

Also, how do I uninstall Recovery Console? This was installed after running Combofix.

If so, delete them as well.

Recovery Console is an important troubleshooting tool and it should be present on every Windows XP computer.

Yes, but you can also access it by putting in the Windows XP cd. After Combofix installed the Recovery Console it keeps asking me if I want to go to it each time my computer boots up. That message is just annoying and makes booting up even longer.
