Have brother-in-law that had a power surge at his house and now the computer will not power on (boot). The light on the motherboard is flashing constant. Any ideas what this is? Motherboard fried? Power supply is Antec 500w. Will provide more details if necessary. Motherboard looks ok no burned spots or whatever. Any thoughts appreciated!

Sounds like something did fry... You'll have to replace items till you find the culprit. The power supply is a likely culprit and the easiest thing to try.

Thanks for your response. I'll get another power supply. The Antec was a brand bew one. Would the power light on the motherboard still flash constantly if the psu is bad? Again, I thank you.

Finally got a new power supply and now the light on the motherboard is steady! but still won't power up. I removed the cpu fan and it has a distinct burnt odor where the heat sink is. The thermal paste has a burnt smell. Would that keep the computer from powering up? and if I replace just the cpu and fan should I also replace the motherboard? Will replacing just the fan and cpu cause damage to the cpu if the motherboard is bad? Again thanks to all.

I would start by only replacing the thermal paste.

As I mentioned before: You'll have to replace items till you find the culprit.
