I have an Acer 5410 laptop that whilst left on overnight a few nights ago developed a charging fault.
I am running windows 7 home premium.
The power monitor started showing 68% available (Plugged in, Not charging)

If I disconnect the mains cable the power is instantly killed (wont run on battery)
When plugged into mains the light on the front of the machine is blue whether the computer is running or not, indicating full battery charge (it is normally orange when charging.)

I have tried the obvious and de-installed/re-installed the power monitor drivers in case they had become corrupted. No change.

I am now thinking it is a hardware problem so have ordered a new battery in the hope that it is simply one of the cells gone bad (open circuit) in the battery pack.

Whilst I am waiting for the new battery pack has anyone got any thoughts?

    Regards
    Brian

A common issue with lappys is that the ac plug attached to the mobo gets broken. Try wiggling it to see if the connection changes.

Thanks but I should have mentioned that this was the first thing that crossed my mind but given that the laptop performs perfectly when plugged in and will NOT run at all on battery this was quickly dismissed.

Looks like your battery is shot, I'd remove it now and run mains only to prevent any possible further damage. Let us know how things are going once you get the replacement.

I received my new battery in the bpost this morning and it has solved the problem.
It seems my original thoughts were correct. One or more of the cells had gone "bad" overnight.
    Happy.
