    Hi all,

I want to copy my old IE and FF favorites/links/settings file from my old XP system to my new Win7 system. Issue is - my old system died on me, think it's the motherboard shorting out, so purchased a new Win7 system, however, I'm not able to boot into my old HDD with XP on it to use IE/FF to export/import the Fav's/Links/Settings.

I tried to boot into the XP HDD on my new system, but no go, just sat there - don't think it could figure out the new configuration of the Win7 Intel board. The old XP HDD is a SATA drive, so I cloned it (using Acronis tools as a bootable system drive) onto an IDE drive to try to boot XP onto an older IDE XP system I have, but still no go, just sat there at the BIOS start saying 'Missing operating system'.

Unless there is a way (without the involved dual boot system) to boot from my XP system HDD to use IE/FF to export the file, how do I go about copying which files in the XP system that I can then use to paste/import those files into the current Win7 IE/FF browsers so I have my old favs/links/settings for IE and FF?

Hope it made sense....and thanks for any suggestions!

You don't need to boot of the old hard disk to access your data from it.

Attach your old hard disk to your new Win 7 computer, boot into Win 7 & then access your data from there. IE Bookmarks are stored in C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Favorites, where user_name is your user name on the computer. Here subsitute old hard disk drive letter in case of C:.

FireFox stores your Bookmarks in places.sqlite file in your profile.

Thanks! I'll look for those files on the old HDD, I have it attached but didn't know what specific files to go after.

I assume once I get them I just copy/merge them into the current folder on the Win7 system?

    Thanks again.

No, you will have to Export and Import. Go to File and you will see what I mean.

Not so fast Mr Bill :) - the hard drive on which the data is stored is not bootable so export via IE is not a possibility.

IE Favorites can be copied straight away. No problem.

I would move the FF complete profile. Copy the old profile files to somewhere in your new hdd. I tend to name it as "My FF ". Now run profile manager, create a new profile & point it to the new folder. You would get everything as was on your old computer including bookmarks, passwords, addons.

He said that the MOBO was bad on the old system, not the HD. Can take the HD and put it in another working PC and get what he needs that way. Brrn there done that.

    Hi MrBill,

I did try to load from the old XP hard drive onto another older XP system but it would not boot from the old HDD, kept saying the operating system was missing. So will need to go the way of copy/paste the files themselves that others have listed. Any idea why the old XP HDD won't load/boot?

Thanks to everyone else for their suggestions! Will try them out.

Scratch that. Did some searching in FF Help and found out how to adjust the profiles. After going through all the suggestions/process, was able to get most of my settings but not all. For some reason the add-ons that I had on the old system didn't convert and some of my favorite links didn't come over either. Rather than trying to redo the process I've edited what I have and it will do.

Thanks again to everyone for their assistance!
