Just to remind you, if it is a faulty Optical drive don't let them charge you anything, as it is still under Warranty.
To replace a Optical drive will take no more than 10 minutes.
Maybe even someone in your family can do that for free.

What I am trying to say is, some Warranties are Parts and Labor and some are Parts only and you pay for Labor. With some charging enough for labor that it will pay for the parts as well.

Thanks - again - hawk22 ! Dell said it would 'cost' arm & leg to get a tech here. Will check my Warranty re this. (Grins at concept of 'someone in family can do it...' ! Do have a friend who might be able to do this should it not be included in Warranty). Will be a week before I can get this organised.

    Very Helpful !

    Best,

Unless I missed it, you never did reply as to whether you could browse the CD or not. If you haven't tried, put an audio CD in the drive, click the start button, then click on computer. Can you see the drive there? If so, double click it to open it. If it opens, double click on one of the songs to see if it will play. Can you play them this way?

    Playing a CD

Thanks, will do this...and will have to do so because I got So Angry about it, I ...gulp...clicked a 'thingy' which reformatted the whole hard drive back to 'factory state' ! Sat for 2 hours while it ...deleted everything - telling me...'Too Late to go back!' Left it for a cupla days, 'cos couldn't face it, then, managed to get I/net back...But it's all rather overwhelming now...and still no CD recognition. So, as you said...gotta get Dell to do the 'CD' stuff. The rest...up to me. (Well, at least I'm learning Really a Lot ! :) along the...way !

    Best & Thanks,
    Sarah001.

    Thankyou Zander,
Yes I have put an audio CD in the drive (several hundred attempts), and did click the start button, and then clicked on 'Computer ". The drive didn't appear.

Thanks ever so much for trying to assist.

    Best,
    Sarah001
