It is well known that files such as .VBS and others can be 'associated' with Notepad or other text processors. Thus if such files are embedded in attachments, they will cause no harm.

Seems to me I saw somewhere how to send OE 6 attachments directly to Notepad. That way they could be harmlessly viewed without endangering the system. Any one got a link to this?

This is how you do it in IE5 .

    Open up the message ,
    1.Go to the File Menu
    2.Select Save Attachment
3.Hightlight the attachment you want to save.
4.Browse to the location you want to save it to.
    5.Click Save.

    Thanks Jmatt.

I was hoping to find something like the context menu where you can right click and 'Send To' a editor program. But I guess Microsoft doesn't want it that way. Your suggestion appears to be the next best thing.

Here is how to make your own right click > send to's .

    http://windows.about.com/library/tips/bltip010.htm?iam=dpile&terms=sendto+attachments

Tip #10: Adding to the "Send To" List

Many of you have discovered that when working with files in Explorer (or My Computer or Network Neighborhood), you can right-click a file and chose from a list of destinations under the "Send To" menu.  For instance, right-clicking a file, you can choose to send it to a floppy disk, simply by choosing that option from the menu.

You can add any shortcut to this list, simply by placing it in the following folder:

    %system root%\Profiles\username\SendTo

For me, that means C:\WINNT\Profiles\ludensd\SendTo.  This is a handy place to put a shortcut to notepad.exe, or a shortcut to your home directory, if you have a network.   You can even place shortcuts to printers in there.  Simply right-click an object (such as a printer or disk drive), or folder, and drag it to the SendTo directory, drop it, and chose "Create Shortcut Here. "  No reboot necessary, even!

Yes, the 'send to' in the 'context Menu' is great. I already have 13 items in it, including one called 'Add to this Menu' which allows me to add items directly to the "send to" menu.

But getting back to good old OE, right clicking on an attachment does not offer 'Send To' , only 'Open ", 'Save As', and 'Save All'.

We know where the 'Send To' menu is located, maybe we can find where the comparable file is located in OE.

I appreciate the effort you have put into this.

You can go into Folder Options and set the VBS files to open with Notepad as default. Just make Edit the default action instead of Open.

Funny you should mention ScriptSentry. I downloaded it in Sept. 2001. The last entry in the log file was 1-31-02! Probqbly I re-installed Windows on that date and forgot about adding it back into the system. Thanks to you, I will activate it.
