Is it possible to stop certain programs from not being added to my start menu instead of constantly having to right click and "remove from this list "?

I'm guessing it would at least have to be a reg hack somewhere...

Sure that will make my start menu smaller but that won't prevent programs from showing up that I use. There are ones that I use frequently that I don't want to show up in the list.

Right click the Orb > select Properties > Privacy > Uncheck "Store & display recently opened programs... "

Then, populate the list with just the programs you want:
Orb > All Programs > rt click a program > select Pin to start menu.

I have both boxes unchecked and pinnned programs only in my start menu.

In previous Windows versions there was a way to exclude programs from being added to the start menu's frequently used programs space using a registry entry, but this doesn't work with Windows 7.

I haven't been able to locate an alternate method.

    Tony,

Yea, that's a work-around, but in previous Windows versions (including Vista) you could actually block programs, so still use the Start menu as intended (without having to pre-populate it in your way).

    Arie,

Thanks. I didn't realize that could be done because from XP forward I always setup systems using the Classic start menu, which isn't available anymore in Windows 7. I've since grown accustomed to the Win 7 menu.

Well, I guess I'll shut it off from pre populating the start menu and I'll do all of the populating myself. Too bad there isn't a way to stop it from choosing certain programs.

    Tony ...

I was a holdout on the move to Win7 for over a year, primarily because of the user interface, but last week I installed it as a dual-boot option along with XP Pro so I could see just how much I could customize it.

The first thing I did was to return to the Classic look by selecting the Classic theme in the Control Panel Personalization applet.

The second thing was to go online and search for a way to restore the Classic Start menu. I found, and downloaded, Classic Shell which, after installation, returned the Classic Start menu.

The third thing I did was to copy the contents of my XP Start menu folder to the Win7 Start menu folder. Voilá, I'm now back in business with the Classic Start menu looking the way I want it to.

I still don't like Win7 for a number of reasons, primarily because it IS so hard to customize, but I'll keep working on it. In the meantime, I still have my trusty XP installation to fall back on.

    Thanks Jim.
Yes, I am aware of those customize apps.
