Windows update KB974431 has caused Windows Media Player12 to malfunction. I have seen several posts on various Windows forums metioning the same problems I am having but I cannot remove this update.

I have tried all the suggestions found on this forum and so far all the Windows updates persist. I have used the method below and all of the Windows updates still exist after several shut downs.

When I run Windows Update it tells me that my PC is up to date. I only want to remove and re-install KB974431 manually. I have tried to install it manually on top of the existing installation but it is not allowed.

This quote is from another thread and as I have just stated , it doesn't work for me. If I try the most obviuos fix but clicking "remove installed update" Kb974431 is not even listed as an installed update. Any other ideas.

    Quote:
    1. Click on Start and type services.msc into the search box, then click on services in the box above. Scroll down the list to Windows Update, right click on it and select stop.

    2. Click on the Start button and then copy and paste this command into the search box:

    %windir%\SoftwareDistribution

Then click on "Software Distribution" in the box above and delete the entire contents of the "Download" folder. Do not delete the actual folder just its contents.

    3. Go back and turn the Windows Update service back on.

None of my systems had this update installed, so I've never been offered this through Windows Update. Most likely because I never encountered any of the problems addressed in the update.

I can't even install it manually (says it doesn't apply to my system), so can't help you that much...

Now the part that you quoted will not help you at all.

If it is not too long ago you installed this update I suggest running System Restore and restore your system back to the restore point that was made prior to the update being installed.

My restore points do not go that far back. I also get the message that the update "does not apply to my sytem ", but it was there in a package of about fifty updates that arrived all at once after a new installation of Win 7-64.

When I click on "veiw update history" I have a list of 104 installed updates on my PC. In the upper right corner of this list I can clcik on "installed updates" I get a list of only 33 installed updates. At the top of this list there is an option to "uninstall an update ". This particular update is not listed.

Although I have not found a reference to this update on Windows B.B.S. there are many refences and problems related to it on Microsoft Answers. The solutions I have found for removing particular updates do not work.

The issue is: Micorsoft Update sent me an update I do not need, it is causing problems and I want to remove it. Is there any way other than doing a clean install of Windows 7 and starting over?

P.S.On my list of installed updates this update was listed as "important "!

I would doubt the update is installed if it isn't listed in Control Panel > Programs and Features > View Installed Updates.

When I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 on my laptop I only installed the updates needed to install SP1 and any updates offered after that. Windows only has 32 updates (included IE9 and Virtual PC, while my desktop running Windows 7 since pre-release has 36 updates.

I don't have the update, but my Windows Media Player is v.11. I use it very rarely.

This issue has been resolved although not sure how. After kb:974431 installed during a windows update, WMP12 did not recognize some of my music files. I found the same issue reported by others on other forums.

I disabled WMP12 and Media Center. I found an automatic error check for Windows Update and ran it. I reported that it had found errors and corrected them but did not list what errors it had fixed.

I installed and ran "System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems" (KB947821) [February 2011]. I'm not sure it did anything for past installations. I then used the Command Console to run> wusa /uninstall /kb:974431 . It reported that kb:974431 was not installed.

I enabled WMP12 and Media Center again and it now recognises the music files that it could not recognize before. In the future I plan to install windows updates one at a time and use my pc for a while after each installation to be sure there are no prblems.
