    Hi all,

Using Google, in Preferences, selecting, "Open search results in new browser window ", just produces a browser shell with an empty address bar and going nowhere. Clicking 'Stop' then 'Refresh' fills in the empty address bar and the page loads normally.

Not just Google, other sites with embedded Hyperlinks refuse to download, including the new windows update site.

In Outlook Express clicking on the Hyperlink on an inbox mail also produces an frame with an empty address bar.

I have tried everything I can think of .... Re-installing IE6 / Re-installing Windows / looking at all the browser options I can think of, etc.

My only recent activity was to download the new KAzaa Lite, though its hard to know if this has any bearing on the problem.

I am running W98SE / AVG anti virus / Outpost Firewall.

I recently had a Floppy borne virus my daughter brought home from school ! ( VBS Redlof ), This seemed to stay on the floppy and the virus scan says all clear.

I would much appreciate any clues or ideas on this problem as surfing is now a very dysfunctional experience !

    Thanks.

    Norman.

    Hi Norman
    Welcome to the boards!
    You might try this?
I'd also give Housecall a run through, just for an extra confirmation that you've not got a virus on your system.

After Daizy's good advice Do cleanup of all, both windows temps and internet temps!

Then download and do the following in deepest scan mode and remove all they find:

    Spyware and adware removal

    http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html

Kazaa lite is good has no spy/adware but if you have never cleaned spy/adware you may be in for a surprise!

In any case a cleanup and these programs will help overall if not correct your problem which correct they probably will!

    HI Daizy / Mike,

Nice one ! I'm half way there. Hyperlinks now work from e-mails, for example the forum post notification alert.

    This is progress !

I am still having a problem with links to other sites, or links within sites.

As I said I have tried re-installing IE6 on top of itself. Maybe a solution would be to do a full uninstall and re-install ?

    Thanks for the advice.

    Hi again Norm
Does that mean you've already cleaned out your temp files, ran adaware and the online virus scan?

Norm, don't swim half way accross the river then turn around and go back!

I think you mean reinstall windows????!!! Drastic step!!! for such a simple thing as this!

I don't understand way everyone jumps on reinstall windows so quickly! Their systems sure are simpler than mine! If I had to do that it would take me weeks to get everything back like I had it and I would still lose! Course I wouldn't because I have 2 different full images of windows and all my data is on other drives and backed up seperately! But I don't think everyone that jumps on reinstall so quickly does!

Finish the cleanups and spy/adware cleans! If youve done those then let us know!

AFTER!!!! you have done these go to IE tools security click Default level at the bottom, then apply! then again IE tools-internet options-program hit reset defaults, click apply then same place Advanced restore Defaults, click apply!

    Reboot recheck for the problem!

    Let us know either way!

    Hi Daizy / Mike,

OK I admit I hadn't cleared the various temp files, but I have now.

I ran the Spybot software ... all clear. I regularly run Ad-Aware with an updated reference file so no problem there.

As it happens I ran the PC-Cillen House Call yesterday, with my installed AVG doing a daily run today.

Mike I followed your suggestions carefully to no avail.

It's really frustrating to be snagged by something which on the surface seemed so simple.

The re-installation I was mentioning was that of IE6. I have re-installed it, but not with uninstalling the current version first.

First attempts at this have not been encouraging. I have IE6 SP1 and Internet Tools. On Add/Remove Programs there is not an uninstall option !

So no further forward ... surely not a format:C needed !

    And so to bed ......................

    Thanks again guys

    Norman.

    Ok Norm

Misunderstood about uninstalling! Because as you found you cannot uninstall IE! So I thought windows!

IE can be uninstalled but not thru normal channels!

    2 more things to try

    1. Goto IE6 tools-internet options-advanced slide down to HTTP 1.1 settings
Make sure there is a check in Use HTTP 1.1

Now recheck for the problem if you made a change here!

    If still don't work!

I don't know how you reinstalled IE!

Here is the correct way! If you did not do it exactly this way then do it as directed below!

Find the ie6setup program and run it, when you get to the place that says typical click the pulldown triangle!

Select FULL! It will then show you all items with the ones allready installed in BOLD!

Put checks in all except the language files even though they are bold and click ok!

The installer will complain and ask if you want to reinstall all components! Answer yes! Let it go, it will require a reboot!

After reboot recheck for your problem and get back!

    Mike / Daizy,

Having followed your excellent advice, I hope to the letter, I was still experiencing this intractable problem.
In fact tonight Hyperlinks would not launch from OE ... I thought we had that one cracked.

I recently bought a 6Gig drive from EBay which I had a MS Backup of my complete ststem on. I know it seems a bit like giving up, and I did lose data, but after the restore I now have the desired full functionality.

I really wonder what the problem was. I'm sure it was nothing simple. I think we explored most possible avenues.

I want to thank you both for your perseverance and patience, and above all your expert advice.

I would hope to make your aquaintance on some future occasion.

    Regards

    Norm.
