Aloha, I'm running W7 home prem with 3 gigs ddr2 RAM. When I try to play this URL in IE9:

    http://www.katu.com/traffic/live

the window on the page will look like a media player but it wouldn't play. It's a 'mms' url and it won't play in Firefox either with a pop up saying "Windows media player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported.... "

IE9 will show the web page with the media player window with buttons grayed out. Doesn't give any popup saying why it won't play.

Any idea how to set the protocol in IE9 so that this will play?

    Hello Swedemen,

    With in media player:
verify that the Player is configured to use all of its supported protocols.

    To configure protocol settings

    a. In Windows Media Player, on the Tools menu, click Options.

    b. In the Options dialog box, on the Network tab, in the Streaming protocols area, select all the protocol check boxes (Multicast, UDP, TCP, and HTTP), so that a check mark is displayed in each.

Note that the supported protocols can be used only to stream digital media files. Windows Media Player cannot be used as a browser.

In IE9 you should get a bar at the bottom of the page that states something like ths:

"This pages want to run a Media Player Extension... Allow button "

You must click the Alow button. You'll get the prompt 2 times because there are 2 traffic cams on that page. At this time 9:11 AM EST only one cam is active, the top video is empty, probably an issue with the traffic cam itself or the server.

goddez1, all the boxes are already checked, still doesn't play.

TonyT, IE9 doesn't show any bar, that's what I was looking for also. It sits there not rendering the streaming media with buttons grayed out.

In firefox - options/Advanced/Network, the connection setting is on "auto-detect proxy settings for this network ", but the window at the bottom has no settings showing.

    Well then...

On to the next step found:

Register the wmnetmgr.dll file by using an account that is in the Administrators group. At an elevated command prompt, run the following command.:

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    2. At the command prompt, type cd %windir%\system, and then press ENTER.
    3. Type regsvr32 wmnetmgr.dll, and then press ENTER.
    4. Type exit, and then press ENTER.
    ================================

No luck with the above try:
"renaming the networking information folder" for the Player so that it can rebuild its networking information files after you restart it.

    >To rename the Player networking information folder

    a. Close Windows Media Player. (To do this, on the File menu, click Exit.)

    b. Click Start, and then click Run.

    c. In the Run dialog box, type the following (exactly as shown):
    %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Media

    d. This step opens the following folder on your computer:
    SystemDrive:\Documents and Settings\UserProfileName\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Media

    e. Folder name/# found will vary...In this folder, rename the folder 10.0, or 11.0 or 12.0 to
    (your version number).0.bak.

    f. Start the Player and try to stream the content again.

    ----------------------
    And just cause....
I too as Tony mentioned was prompted by IE to allow the additon of the download and extension for windows media player. Once allowed and again responding to wmp player safety of using "public networking" access, IE9 played this with a rather long pause for actual downloading of stream. It was not instant.

on the other hand firefox played this from the get go but I do have and use VLC player in firefox:
