One of the USB ports on my laptop does not work. When I plug a USB device into that port, the laptop does not notice that the device was plugged in.

My laptop has only three USB ports, so when one out of the three does not work, that is often a problem. Is there anything I can try to fix it?

I doubt whether you can fix it as it will probably be part of the M/B or it may be a small circuit board which connects onto the Main board.
Whichever it is, it will be a complete dismantle of the laptop generally to facilitate any repair/renewal.

Why not purchase a small 4 port hub or a external powered USB hub.
I have a 7 port hub (external power) hub which plugs into the AC socket with a plug which is a compact power converter.
Works great when at home - no good for travelling. Cheers Neil.;)

Hi Daanii. One thing you can check is you can go into the labtops BIOS and see if the USB port is disabled or not. Also take a look in device manager and see if any USB controllers are disabled there. If the USB controllers are enabled you could try uninstalling the USB root hubs in device mananger and rebooting the computer to allow Windows to redetect the devices.

If none of those steps solve your problem then I would follow Neil's advice.

I bought from Amazon.com ($6.98) and use a New High Speed HUB Octopus Type USB 2.0 7 Ports with Adapter. It works great. Now instead of 3 usb ports I have 10.

Thanks for the suggestions. I already do have a powered USB hub that I use with a desktop. But I do not like to carry it with me to use with my laptop. That's why I would like to try to fix the laptop USB port that does not work.

Two working USB ports used to be enough. Now it often is one too few. I'll try the suggestions from Evan Omo tomorrow, and post the results.

    Thanks again.

make sure that if windows was reinstalled at some point that the motherboard drivers were installed as well
If the usb port is non functional - the other fellow was right get a usb hub
Its best if its a powered hub with an ac adapter
    Otherwise devices may not work
Another option if you have an older laptop with a PCMCIA slot is USB PCMCIA adapter

Hi ! It can be a problem of your hardware. Because your other ports are running but one port is not running so it will be a problem of hardware only. Better to use other working ports or contact dealer.

Two options to give you additional usb ports:

    1) a powered usb hub
    2) a PMCIA USB adaptor

if your big box store does not stock the PCMIA adaptor try ebay

Thanks for the suggestions. Just to clarify, I do have a powered USB hub that I can use. But it's not very convenient to use with my laptop. That's the problem.

What was the outcome of Evans suggestions?

Also visionof's idea to reinstall motherboard (or chipset) drivers is worth a try.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried them all. The problem was not solved. Looks like it is a hardware problem that is beyond my skill.

Thats a shame. :( Well as long as you can use a USB hub with the working USB port you will have more USB ports available and you should be ok.

I would take note though that if that port has failed then there is an increased chance that other components on the motherboard could fail as well. So as a cautionary measure I would backup any important data just to be on the safe side.

Thank you for the suggestion about backing up. That's a good one.

One last data point I forgot to mention. When I boot the laptop in Linux, the suspect USB port does not work then either. So it looks like a hardware problem for sure.

My laptop has three USB ports, so two are still good. A few years ago, two would have been plenty. It's surprising now though how often I want three. We get spoiled, I guess.
