I am working on a Dimension 3000 and the sound is not working. This is what I have done:
Replaced the speakers with small usb powered units that are known working
Re-installed the audio drivers from Dell(Legacy audio and Soundmax Integrated)
checked all settings in CP/device mgr
This is an XP Home os with 1 gb ram. It does not play music from the cd or systems sounds, but I do hear a hiss from the speakers when I increase the volume.
BTW, it does not have a sound card, just the mb pci
    Thanks

As per my above question "Re-installed the audio drivers from Dell(Legacy audio and Soundmax Integrated) "
Is that what you meant? The only driver they showed was analog audio device

Can you expand on this PCI would indicate a sound card, can we assume you meant onboard sound?

Any problems showing in device manager? Have you tried headphones in the sound out Jack?

sorry, right it is onboard sound, and the device mgr shows no problems or conflicts..all devices show as working. I did connect some ear buds and got the same hiss as before with the speakers...still no system sounds as well

have you enabled AC97 in the BIOS, the drivers in the Dell link are for your onboard sound.

I am not sure, I just went into the bios and made sure the onboard audio was turned on...is that what you are referring to?
    Thanks

Follow Hawk's idea and if it doesn't help confirm you're using the right jack (it's easy to get them confused - done it upteen times).

Failing all of the above perhaps some feedback, how did the issue arise in the first place, you say you were working on it (for this reason or something else), did this work require a reinstall of the OS (if so have you installed the correct chipset drivers etc).

Essentially the more background info you can supply the better we may be able to help.

I was brought the system to get the sound to work since it had not been used in some time. I found some adware/malware and ran scans and cleaned it up using malwarebytes and then ran avast...all is clean, but still cannot get sound. I have hooked up the speakers and earbuds to all three ports with same results. The OS is factory XP home

I'd start by making sure all is clean in our malware forum (though to be honest I don't think malware was/is the issue).

What feedback did the owner give you regarding the sound not working (eg was this the reason it hadn't been used in some time)? Have you the owner or others been inside the system? Are you using front or rear jacks to test out put?

Since it hasn't been used for "some time" perhaps replacing the CMOS battery may be in order (though again I don't suspect this is the issue).

Install up to date drivers for the entire system from dell and let us know the answers to above.

    Thanks for all the help.
My cousin said they have not had speakers installed in this system for a year. I am the only one who works on their systems. There are no front panel jacks on the 3000. The cmos battery tests 3.2 V, so I think it is ok.
The only other thing for me to try is to dl the chip set drivers, etc
I will do this and report back..

Well I'm outta ideas apart from a dodgy jack connection but your increasing hiss when you turn up the volume would appear to dispute that.

Only thing I can suggest now is to do a repair install of the OS.

QUICK EDIT: When increasing the volume is this a volume knob on the speakers or volume control on the PC?

I have the sound on the system maxed out...the speaker volume control wide open is the light hiss, which make me believe that all my connections are ok
BTW, I did a search on this forum and got this answer which resolved the problem for another person: "Ok try this fix, click Start< Run and type regedit and hit enter. Once Registry Editor opens highlight Hkey_Current_User. Once it is highlighted look on the right column which will show a Reg_SZ value with the name (default). Right click this value and hit delete. Reboot the computer and test.
I tried to delete it and it said: "unable to delete all specified values "

Did you check that the onboard sound (soundmax) is selected as the default device in -control panel - sounds and audio devices - audio tab - sound playback?

Reason asked is if HD video card was/is installed it might be set as the playback device.

Also same place - click volume buttom - nothing muted - and individual volumes (wave, cd audio) turned up.

Otherwise I'm also out of ideas - except for buying a $25.00 (caught on sale ) sound card (creative audigy or sound blaster extreme audio pci card).

ps - whoops - and same place - advanced button - are 2 speakers and not no speakers selected?

That solution just doesn't make sense to me, can you please post a link to the thread in case you've missed some vital information?

    UPDATE!
I opened up the system again and paid special attention to the hardware again. There is a sound card installed and the onboard sound ports are blocked off...I've never seen this. In device manager, I have 3 different sound devices enabled: Legacy audio, soundmax Integrated audio and SBlive 24 bit. Is that a problem to have all of them enabled?

No. it's no problem at all  ;)

Legacy and one of the others may be required but I'd suggest you uninstall all sound drivers, reboot and let windows decide which to install

Not a problem - but see my previous post about selecting the one you want to use.

Wildfire types quicker - will let you take it from here. Out of any other ideas.

Thanks again for all the help. I found that the SBlaster card was defective, and the onboard sound was off in the bios. I re-installed the drivers and removed the block from the speaker ports and it finally worked. It is easy to overlook obvious problems for me sometimes
