Can anyone tell me why Win2000 takes upwards of 3 minutes
to shut down on a 1.3GHz AMD Athlon PC? Or how to shorten it?
I'd like a faster startup, but can understand not getting it. However, the shut down should be doable in seconds.

Do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and see how many things you have running. A bunch can take some time to shut down. 3 minutes is rather long.

If you end task on everything except explorer and systray then shut down, how long does it take?

plain-text editor, The Bat! mail client, maxmem.exe
    memory cleaner.

"AOL ", GOD NO!!!!!!!!! Not if they paid me.
Nor any instant messenger or pager.

    Only Spybot?

    What about Adaware also?

And did you run them, and did they find much, did you run full deep scans and did you remove all they found!

    Start-Programs-Accessories-System tools-Disk Cleanup

Disk cleanup for this purpose has nothing to do with disk space but to get rid windows temp and useless files and internet temp files and a few others that could cause problems!

AOL Oh God no! I heard that!!

    Get Virus scanner back on!

Let me know about the questions above after you have done the disk cleanup and shutdown and reboot

Done. Not much to remove, and I chose to keep Alexa (usually turned off). Shutdown still over 3.5 minutes.

Go here download and install this! It will give you simple control of the startups!

I know that you have terminated them and tested but some still slow system down even if ended with taskmanager!

    Startup control panel
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

After it is installed you will have a new entry called startup in the control panel! Go to your control panel find startup and uncheck everything in all tabs shut down and reboot!

Startup should be faster now also!

If shutdown is normal now, begin to put the checks back in one at a time untill you put one in that causes the slow shutdown!

I suspect the gamma but put it back last!

Now if problem is still there after you uncheck all items then get back to me!

One other test when you get time, hit F8 and go into safe mode and see if the long shutdown occurs here! If not it is a clear sign one of the startup items are the problem!

    Mike
