I don't see protection mode or smart filtering on the bottom of web pages
(by the zoom level). Are they on by default and just not indicated? Or are they off and I need to turn them on? If so where do I do that?

Hi Alicia. To check if Protection Mode and SmartScreen filter is enabled in IE9 open IE click Tools< Internet Options< Security Tab. Highlight each internet zone and place a checkmark in the box that says enable protected mode. Once thats done, in the Internet Options window click the Advanced Tab. Scroll down and under the security section place a check mark in the enable smart screen filter checkbox. When done click apply and ok.

Restart IE9 for the changes to take effect.

MS have 'simplified' IE 9 by removing some indicators from the Status Bar - and elsewhere.

AFAIK Protected Mode is enabled by default in the Internet and Trusted Zones and Smart Filtering is too, but as Evan posts you can check where he indicated.

AFAIK, Protected Mode is ON by default in only the Internet Zone & Restricted Zone.

Yes I did realize that when I checked it out. Does it need to be on for the others?

No. Its not necessary but you can turn it on for all four zones if you want. As long as Protected Mode is enabled on the Internet and Restricted Zones then its fine.
