Does anyone else have the same issue where a printer driver will keep re-enabling the SNMP feature on a network printer? We have 3 Win 7 x64 machines that we have disabled SNMP, because it is useless and when it is on the printer shows as offline randomly.

Pretty sure this would be better in the Networking forum but even there it's probably likely we'd need to know make/model of printer and driver version?

EDIT: How the printer is connected to the network could be useful as well ;)

Sorry for the delay. The printer is a network printer, driver is locally installed on each machine. Brother AIO DCP 8080Dn I think. Latest version from their site. I did not think this was a specific printer issue but more of a Windows 7 issue.

If the printer is connected directly to a switch/router, then make sure on each computer that the printer is not set as shared. On installation, the default should be set to No when prompted to answer, and it should not be shared.

BTW, SNMP is not useless. The Brother Status Monitor application probably uses that protocol and that's likely why it gets re-enabled. SNMP should always be set to "On" for any brand printer that's networked via a switch or router. If the printer randomly goes offline, or if have other issues, then most likely the network settings of the printer are not configured correctly.

Here's the BrotherTroubleshooting guide. (shows correct method of configuring your Brother network printer)

You should also check for updated drivers from Brother, as the SNMP component is built into the printer driver. The latest driver is dated 01/07/2011.

If you are also using the Brother Web BRAdmin or Web Mgmt. software then you'll need SNMP enabled.
