On my FAT32 C: drive, there is a folder that I can't delete or rename. Error message in either case says "cannot delete: can't read from source file or disk ". It appeared after doing some normal deleting and renaming of folders used by Dreamweaver.
Right clicking, the properties window shows no info(no file type, 0 bytes, etc).
I can copy a file into it and it will delete BUT, when I reopen Explorer - there it is again!
I have run the scan on the drive - no errors reported.
Has this happened to you? Any ideas?

This has been known to work for me:

    Check this key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace

for an unknown CLSID entry. There is normally only a default data string in that folder. Export a copy, then delete anything found other than the default..

    Good luck!

And....to enhance the archives with alternate possibilities, try this:

Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open. Close all open programs. Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe. Leave Task Manager open. Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory that contains the subdirectory or file you want to delete. At the command prompt type DEL <filename> where <filename> is the file you wish to delete. If it's a folder, type RD /s <foldername> substituting the correct folder name. Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell. Close Task Manager.

Do be sure you are deleting the right item!

Thanks so much for the ideas BUT...
I tried both techniques and the ghost still remains!
The registry entries were normal and the DOS command returned a message saying it couldn't read the file/folder. And yet, there this folder sits with a named folder icon listed proudly on my C drive.

Boot to the windows Recovery Console, use the command console, and try from there.
