Running Windows 7 on a brand new Acer laptop. All of a sudden I am unable to create new folders in a paticular folder called (say) ABC. When I right click the mouse then select "New" all the options appear except "Folder ". I can create folders elsewhere then cut and/or copy them to "ABC" but they don't appear there using Windows Explorer. However, a search will find them. If I again create this new folder elsewhere then I can't copy it because it says it's already there in "ABC" - do I want to replace it?
Now, get this!!! If I create a copy of "ABC" (giving me a "ABC - Copy ") all the new folders are there. So, I delete the original "ABC ", rename the copy to "ABC" but then all the folders have again gone missing!! This is driving me nuts because I have many Excel workbooks linking to "ABC" so I can't simply use a renamed copy of it.

    Any help out there, please?

Have you tried changing the naming conventions to see if that will help? (i.e. A_B_C) I don't know what's causing your PC's inability to create a new folder (especially if you're following this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Create-a-new-folder), but I would try that to see if it will help at all.

The actual filename is "Sportsbet 2011" and I have been using it for months - creating and deleteing folders etc.. When I rename it to "XYZ" all the added folders appear but when I rename it back to "Sportsbet 2011" they disappear again. I don't wish to permanently rename it because of all the Excel workbooks I have linked to workbooks in the offending folder.
