While surfing the web FF4 will often freeze up and I'll either have to refresh the page or, in some instances, reboot because I cannot click on anything. I've only had FF4 for a couple of days now and recently formated and reinstalled Xp.

I've recently discovered that the biggest issue I have is with java. Java and FF4 don't seem to get along very well. Without java FF4 works great. Any way around this? Thanks.

There's no need for Java today. Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte both dumped Java several months ago and I followed suit. I don't miss it. Just get rid of it.

Actually, Java is used wuite a lot, much more than people realize. The main reason FF (any version) locks up is due to Adsd-Ons. Update your computer to the latest Java, then go to FF > Tools Add-Ons > Extensions > disable the Java console, then Plugins > disable Java Deployment Toolkit. These are not needed for Web page Java.

If have Java Quick Start anywhere in FF or in Windows Services, disable it.

But it's more likely the freezes are caused by another Plugin or Extension.

Java is needed for most online games, many bank sites and other secure sites and secure Web applications.

Tony, my bank does not require Java and I've honestly not missed it in the months since listening to Gibson and dumping it. Granted, I might be at a loss for online games, but in my particular case that doesn't matter.

I need java. I did disable everything but java itself Tony. Seems to be better. Not sure on the add- ons though. I had the same ones with FF3 with no problems. Anyway thanks for the advice. :)

. You should know that because an addon worked on FF3, does not mean that it works on FF4.

Agreed, but I use it for OpenOffice and sometimes for downloading youtube videos. Take any youtube url, such as:
    http:// www. youtube.com / ?xyz

and put the work "kiss" in front of youtube: kissyoutube.com and you can download the video.
